Monster-in-Law (2005)

Your enjoyment of “Monster-in-Law” will be in direct proportion to your ability to tolerate some language. Charlotte, known as Charlie to her friends (Jennifer Lopez) is a free-spirited, genuinely kind girl who keeps herself busy with several different odd jobs, including walking dogs. She isn’t living her dreams, but she’s content with what she has and makes the most of every day, joyfully. When she meets handsome doctor Kevin (Michael Vartan) he’s attracted to this sense of peace she exudes. It’s something he’s never known, growing up with the emotionally-charged Viola Fields (Jane Fonda) talk-show host, activist, woman on the … Continue reading

Madeline

Madeline, played by Hatty Jones, is a precious little read headed girl that is sure to win over your heart. In her movie, “Madeline”, she stars as a mischievous orphan in an all girls’ prep/boarding school. Madeline is the smallest of the girls. While her size is little her ideas are big. She keeps her teacher, Miss Clavel, on her toes. As the twelve girls go out they wear matching outfits, coats, and hats. They walk in twos in two straight lines. On one of these outings, Madeline climbs up on the bridge and falls into the river. Miss Clavel … Continue reading

Just Like Heaven (2005)

In “Just Like Heaven,” Elizabeth Masterson (Reese Witherspoon) is a young doctor who is working her way up to attending. She wants this promotion more than anything else in her life, to the point of excluding a social life and even sleep. When we meet her, she’s working through a twenty-six hour shift at the hospital, tired but pulling it together for the sake of her patients. Her sister Abby wants her to come over and meet this guy, and she says she will, but things keep coming up. Finally off work and on her way to her sister’s house, … Continue reading

Meet a Families.com Blogger – Lisa Pietsch!

As the former Community Manager, Lisa was the first person I met when I became acquainted with Families.com, and has become a good friend. Lisa, how fun to interview you today! How long have you blogged for Families.com? I’ve been with Families.com since September 26th, 2005. I believe we had about twenty-six members back then. When management announced they would be hiring bloggers, I applied for the topics of Food, Weight Loss and Disney. When they launched the blogs here in early December 2005, they hired me for all three topics as well as the position of Community Manager. Eventually, … Continue reading

Walk the Line (2005)

While not a particularly easy film to watch, “Walk the Line” is still breathtaking in its gritty reality. I came away deeply moved by this Oscar-winning movie. Joaquin Phoenix plays a young Johnny Cash, a man with a deep voice and an unusual talent for music. As a boy, he often sang hymns with his brother, Jack, who was studying to be a preacher some day. In a freak accident, Jack is killed, and their father never got over it, often saying that the devil took the wrong son. He never saw the good that was in the young Johnny. … Continue reading

American Expansionism – Waistlines Are Continue to Grow

Did you know that American healthcare costs could save about $5.6 billion in treating heart disease if a fraction of Americans, just one-tenth would begin a regular walking program? The report comes from a 2004 study in healthcare costs and the rising concerns associated with obesity and obesity related health problems. The Trust for America’s Health is an advocacy group that supports and promotes increasing the public health funding. They recently published a study that shows an increase in obesity in 31 states with Mississippi leading the way at 29.5% of adults being obese, increasing 1.1% over the previous year. … Continue reading

Joaquin Phoenix.. . .Rapper?

Recently, Academy Award nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix kissed acting goodbye, saying he was leaving to pursue a career in music. Or, did he? When I first read that Joaquin was not going to act anymore, I was saddened. I’ve loved his performance in many movies, but knowing a little about his family background, I wasn’t surprised. In case you didn’t know, Joaquin and his siblings (River, Rain, Liberty, and Summer) were brought up in a less than traditional atmosphere. Their parents, John and Arlyn, were members of the religion Children of God. The Phoenix children spent most of their childhood … Continue reading

It’s Twins for Molly Ringwald and a Break Up for Prince Harry

Falling under my “Better Her than Me” category, I just read that actress and ‘80s sensation Molly Ringwald is expecting twins. I find it hard to believe that the Ringwald is even old enough to have children. Yes, I know, I probably watched Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club too much, but the now 40 year old Ringwald is expecting twins with her husband Panio Gianopoulos. The couple already has a five year old daughter Mathilda Ereni. Right now, Molly is starring in the ABC Family show “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” which deals with teen pregnancy. Molly … Continue reading

Joaquin Phoenix Retires and “Melrose Place” Rides Again

It may have sounded like an April Fool’s joke, but the bomb actor Joaquin Phoenix dropped at a Paul Newman tribute earlier this week was anything but funny. The 34-year-old actor’s stunning announcement: He’s retiring from acting. “I’m not doing films anymore,” the two-time Oscar nominee told a shocked reporter from TV’s “Extra.” According to Phoenix, he’s leaving the big screen behind to concentrate on his music career. While he refused to elaborate on his plans, the actor did reveal that he is currently working on a record for the British band The Charlatans and has been contemplating a move … Continue reading

Joy in the Heart

This week Mick and I saw ‘Little House on the Prairie’ DVDs advertised on sale. What I always loved about this show was the way Christian faith was lived out in daily lives in a simple and honest way. ‘Little House on the Prairie’ also brings back memories as it was a show we watched regularly with our family. Some time back we’d bought series 1 and 2 but not the rest. This week we could only buy series 3. The others were sold out. Obviously we’re not the only ones who like it. As we watched, I said to … Continue reading
