Disney on Ice 2012-2013 Season

A new year means a new group of Disney on Ice shows debuting for the public. All right, I know we’re over halfway through the year, but so many interesting things have been happening with Disney so far in 2012 that this got pushed back to the list. Plus, it’s unlikely that, given how new most of these shows are, they’re going anywhere for a while. Speaking of shows that aren’t going anywhere: Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic is still going strong. It started in 1999 to commemorate the Disney legacy, and although it’s sometimes toured under a … Continue reading

Galaxy Quest (1999)

I can’t help it. I just typed the title “Galaxy Quest” and already I’m laughing. I really liked this movie; let me share why. Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) is an over-the-hill actor whose glory days came while starring as the captain of a starship on an old TV show. Since then, his bread-and-butter has come from appearances at conventions, grand openings, and the like, but he’s never had another role. This has hurt his ego a bit and he longs for a return to the spotlight. The other members of the crew are: Gwen DeMarco (Sigourney Weaver) Alexander Dane (Alan … Continue reading

Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins (2000)

Buzz Lightyear returns to the screen in a way we’ve never seen him before – animated and in space. Our lovable ranger from “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2” is out to conquer the Evil Emperor Zurg, who wants to take over the galaxy. With his gung-ho attitude and his strict adherence to regulations (most of which he wrote himself) he’s the man for the job. The LGMs (little green men) are in danger, and Buzz (voiced by Tim Allen) along with his partner Warp Darkmatter, is sent to save them. But while on this mission, a battle ensues and … Continue reading

Toy Story 2 (1999)

In “Toy Story,” we met Buzz Lightyear, a toy who didn’t know he was a toy. In the sequel, “Toy Story 2,” it’s Woody’s turn to have an identity crisis. While saving a toy from a yard sale box, Woody (Tom Hanks) accidentally falls into a “for sale” pile and is eagerly snatched up by Al, owner of Al’s Toy Barn. Al is a collector who has spent years looking for a Woody doll, and he makes an offer to Andy’s mother. She explains the toy is not for sale, but Al tucks Woody under a pile in his arms … Continue reading

Pixar: Where Math Meets Reality

I remember being in high school algebra class and wondering: “how am I really going to use this in the real world?” I don’t think I was the first math student to wonder such a thing, nor was I the last. It seems that there are even more reasons to take those math classes today than there were in the 1980’s. On Thursday, April 3rd, a scientist from Walt Disney’s Pixar Animation Studios will talk to Hamilton College students about “Math in the Movies”. Tony DeRose heads the research group at Pixar. He has a bachelor’s degree in physics and … Continue reading

A Doll’s Christmas – Tasha Tudor

Tasha Tudor is the illustrator of over a hundred children’s books, and the author of many. The Doll’s Christmas is one of my favorites. It was originally published in 1950, but was reissued in 1999. In the introduction, Tudor explains how the tradition of having the household dolls celebrate Christmas grew from the time she was a young mother needing something to keep the children busy. Tudor says her children learned “the very essence of giving as they made gifts for the dolls to give each other”. In the story, two special dolls invite other dolls to celebrate Christmas and … Continue reading

More Elliot Books by Andrea Beck

I can’t help it – I fell in love with Elliot while blogging about him last year, and when I found these other Elliot books, I just had to snatch them up. He’s just the cutest little stuffed moose! In “Elliot Bakes a Cake,” we find Elliot getting ready to bake a cake for Lionel the stuffed lion’s birthday. All the other toys want to help out too, but there’s just one problem! None of them have ever baked a cake before, and they aren’t even sure what some of the cooking terms mean. Finally they get their batter put … Continue reading

Author Interview – Lynne Jonell (part three) Reader Feedback and About Her Books

Thank you for joining us for part three of our talk with nationally published children’s book author Lynne Jonell. If you missed part one or two, click here. Lynne, when we left off you were telling us how children have strong emotions and often aren’t able to articulate them. You seek to give children a voice in your books, an empowering and comforting pursuit. Have you heard back from parents about how their children react to your books? Oh, yes. They’re funny books, for one thing, and parents and children love the chance to laugh together about some of these … Continue reading

Disney’s Wild Hogs Come in First!

Disney does it again! Its new release “Wild Hogs” opened as this week’s top grossing movie in the US. Of course, with a main male line-up headed by John Travolta, and also starring William H. Macy, Tim Allen and Martin Lawrence, it was bound to be a success! Each of the actors plays a character that is different from the other, and yet they all have something in common – a need to escape the object of their perceived failure, namely women! For me, John Travolta is always going to be one of two types of guy – the playful … Continue reading

Lottie’s Princess Dress – Doris Dorrie

In this darling picture book, Lottie is sound asleep in dreamland and does not want to get up, despite the fact that her mother will be late for work. In her dreams, she’s a princess, going to school in the castle, making crafts, and she does not want to leave her project behind. Finally and with great reluctance, she gets up, but she doesn’t want to wear her boring old clothes. She would much rather wear her princess dress! Never mind that her dress is thin and it’s starting to snow. It’s the perfect day to dress like a princess. … Continue reading
