Tootsie (1982)

This is going to be kind of a flip-floppy review for me – on the one hand, I absolutely loved “Tootsie,” but on the other hand, I can’t endorse all of the content. Dustin Hoffman stars as Michael Dorsey, an out-of-work actor who has been trying for the longest time to raise enough money to produce an off-Broadway play written by his good friend Jeff (Bill Murray). No matter how many auditions Michael goes on, nothing pans out, and he doesn’t know what to do. He doesn’t want to get a regular job – he is an artiste! When a … Continue reading

Breakups Old and New

Think you had already heard all the celebrity breakup news there was for 2011? Nope, two more celebrity breakups were just announced with only 13 days left in the year. Chaz Bono, the only child of Sonny & Cher, has been through a lot the last several years. He hit the big 4-0, underwent a gender transition from female to male, got engaged, and was a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars.” While on the show, the transgender Bono received death threats. In May 2010, Bono legally changed his name from Chastity to Chaz. There was a documentary, “Becoming Chaz” … Continue reading

Acclaimed Director/Actor Sydney Pollack Dies of Cancer

Sydney Pollack, who was a great actor, director and producer, died today at the age of 73. He had been suffering from cancer for about nine months. He was at his home in Pacific Palisades surrounded by family when he passed away. I loved Sydney as Dustin Hoffman’s agent in Tootsie. When Dustin comes into the restaurant dressed as Tootsie and Sydney’s character doesn’t know it is him dressed as a woman, it is a scream! One of my favorite lines of the movie is when Sydney’s character is telling Dustin that he is unemployable as an actor. Dustin says … Continue reading

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium (2007)

At last, a family movie that we truly can all enjoy, from my husband down to my toddler. “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” had something in it for each of us. Mr. Magorium (Dustin Hoffman) is a very old man, and I don’t just mean elderly. He’s over two hundred years old, and he’s had a great many adventures. His childlike appreciation of life has made all who know him appreciate it too, and now, in his later years, he shares that love with the customers in his toy store. His store manager, Molly Mahoney, is also is very good friend. … Continue reading

Robert Redford stars in “The Natural” as Roy Hobbs, a young man with a dream. He wants to be the best baseball player that ever lived, and he’s got the talent to make that dream come true. While heading off on a trip to talk to some coaches about playing, he meets a woman on the train, a mysterious, alluring woman named Harriet Bird. Also on the train is a ball player known as “The Whammer” for his amazing ability with a bat. The Whammer challenges Roy to a contest – if Roy can strike him out on three pitches, … Continue reading

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” is one of the best romantic comedies to come out of the last decade. Written by Nia Vardalos as a commentary on what’s good and not so good about being Greek, she also stars as the main character, Toula Portokalos. Toula’s family owns and operates a Greek restaurant called “Dancing Zorba’s.” Their lives revolve around food, dancing, eating, running the restaurant, eating, huge family gatherings, and eating. They’re a very tight and interconnected family, but there are times when Toula feels they’re a little too tight. Everyone knows everyone else’s business, and it’s just assumed … Continue reading
