The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964)

“The Unsinkable Molly Brown” is a delightful musical loosely based on the real Molly Brown, a down-to-earth woman of great wealth who survived the sinking of the Titanic. Do keep in mind, I said loosely. Debbie Reynolds has our starring role, and we go with her back to Molly’s humble roots. Molly was taken in as an orphan by a family of rough and rowdy boys, and she thinks she’s one of them. She hardly knows how to act like a girl. When Johnny Brown (Harve Presnell) comes along, he falls for her, hard, but she’s determined not to marry … Continue reading

Silly Places to Keep Your Money

One of my favorite movies of all time is The Unsinkable Molly Brown, starring Debbie Reynolds. Anyone who has seen this film is already chuckling, having read the title of this blog … you know where I’m going with this. Molly is a very naïve young lady, and when her husband sells some gold out of his mine and brings home the cash, she decides to put it in the stove. It’s summertime, so the stove’s not being used, and it’s certainly safer than under the mattress, isn’t it? When her husband comes home from taking a dip in the … Continue reading

Last Titanic Survivor Dies

Elizabeth Gladys “Millvina” Dean, the last remaining survivor of the Titanic, died today at the age of 97 in a private nursing home in Ashurst, England where she was living. Millvina didn’t have any personal memories of the sinking of the Titanic, the doomed luxury passenger liner. That is because at the time, she was just nine weeks old. She was on the Titanic with her mother Georgette, father Bertram Frank, and brother Bertram. While Millvina, Georgette, and Bertram survived, her father was among the 1,500 that died on April 14, 1912. The family was headed to Kansas to start … Continue reading

Remembering Titanic: What Would You Have Done?

Back in November when Wayne and I went to visit our families for Thanksgiving, we had the opportunity to see “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition” at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Being a fan of the 1997 movie, I was very psyched to see this exhibit. I’d heard nothing but raves about it from others who’d seen it when it’d been in Florida. It proved as amazing as everyone said. From the recreated passenger cabins (both first class and third) to the grand staircase to the many artifacts recovered from the bottom of the North Atlantic I couldn’t help … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review – February 11th – 16th

Trying to decide what to rent on your next trip to the video store? Maybe our week in review will help you. Our first blog of the week was entitled “Movies I Wish I Could Recommend, but I Can’t.” I discussed the films “Notting Hill,” “My Life So Far,” “Because I Said So,” and “Rumor Has It.” Each of these films lured me in with the promise of being good, but they each let me down, big time. On to happier things . . . “Strictly Ballroom” is a fun mockumentary about the world of ballroom dance and the things … Continue reading
