How Old Are Your Favorite Disney Films?

I have a special little cupboard where I keep all of our Walt Disney children’s classics. OK, it is a pretty big cupboard and it is loaded with both DVDs and VHS tapes. Truth be told, I started collecting Disney movies long before I ever had children. Heck, I was collecting them long before I ever met my husband! I love the Disney classics and even some of the more recent children’s movies made by Disney/Pixar and I love that my kids are enjoying them too. The funny thing about Disney movies is that I could probably tell you where … Continue reading

Disney & Drew Will Make a Run for the “Border”

It looks like Drew Barrymore is teaming up with Disney to make a run for the “Border” in a live-action feature (think Charlotte’s Web and Racing Stripes). The film, South of the Border follows the journey of a Beverly Hills Chihuahua who gets lost in Mexico during a vacation with her owner. Barrymore will be lending her voice talents to the pampered Chihuahua (named Chloe) who needs help to figure out how to get from Mexico back to her digs in Beverly Hills. Joining Barrymore on the project are: Andy Garcia Salma Hayek George Lopez Cheech Martin Paul Rodriguez Edward … Continue reading

Happy Birthday Donald!

Maybe it’s the ageist in me, but Donald looks pretty snappy for 73 years old. Donald is a particular favorite of ours here at home – both my husband and I have always preferred Donald of the Disney characters featured in Mickey and the Gang. The Wise Little Hen Donald premiered in a Silly Symphony cartoon called The Wise Little Hen on June 9, 1934. My grandmother was just 14 years old and once upon a time, she told me about seeing the Disney cartoons featured in the theater. Donald’s hot temper made him an audience darling. In the 1940s, … Continue reading

Saludos Amigos (1943)

During World War II, Disney made two films as part of the Good Neighbor policy with South America. One was “The Three Caballeros,” also reviewed here on Families.com, but before that came “Saludos Amigos.” Our film begins with some artists from the studio boarding a plane for South America. The narrator tells us that they are going in search of new and exciting material for their artwork, and we see live action shots of the peoples of the various countries as well as the cartoonists’ renditions of what they see. Donald Duck appears to take us on a tour of … Continue reading

The Jungle Book (1967)

The Rudyard Kipling tale “The Jungle Book” is just a little bit odd, to say the least. But when you put it in the hands of a master like Walt Disney, and add some talking animals, and a groovin’ monkey king, you’ve got a hit on your hands. Walt Disney’s version of “The Jungle Book” features a kindly panther named Bagheera, voiced by Sebastian Cabot, who comes upon an abandoned baby boy in a basket in the jungle. He knows of a kindly wolf family who could do right by the boy, so he takes his bundle and leaves it … Continue reading

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Walt Disney’s masterpiece “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was the first full-length motion picture ever put out by Disney Studios. It was a bit of a gamble; would audiences respond to it? Walt needn’t have worried; “Snow White” was a smash hit at the box office and continues to be one of the most famous movies ever released. The plot of the movie follows that of the classic fairy tale: Snow White is a beautiful young girl who is being raised by her wicked stepmother, also a powerful queen and witch. Her hair is black as ebony, her lips … Continue reading
