The King and I (1956)

“The King and I” began as the true story of Anna Leonowens, a widow who went to Siam to teach English to the children of the King. She first wrote “The English Governess at the Court of Siam” in 1870, three years after she left Thailand. In 1872, she wrote “The Romance of the Harem”. These two books were the inspiration for Margaret Landon’s 1943 book “Anna and the King of Siam,” after which the 1946 Rex Harrison movie was patterned. Then another movie was made, a musical which starred Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner. This movie so insulted the … Continue reading

Jason and the Argonauts (1963) Movie Review

Jason and the Argonauts is a retelling in film of the Greek myth, Jason and the Golden Fleece. Scary Places: Hollywood Forever

When we lived in San Diego, I loved to visit dead celebrities. That is, I love to visit cemeteries filled with celebrity burial sites and there is probably no better placed to do that than in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, we left there in 2001, just as a now famous cemetery was making its comeback. Hollywood Forever is located in – well, Hollywood as you might imagine. It sits on 62 acres with large lots that were sold to Paramount and RKO Studios. A look around is like looking into Hollywood itself. You will find Don Adams of “Get Smart” fame, … Continue reading

Who is Adam Lambert?

He is one of the most exciting “American Idol” contestants to grace the stage in years, but you may not know too much about Adam Lambert, one of the finalists that will be vying for the title next week. Actually, there isn’t a lot known about Lambert’s pre-Idol life. Yet, if he looks abnormally comfortable on the big stage compared to some of the other contestants, there is a reason. Not only is the 27 year old one of the oldest competitors this season (third place finisher Danny Gokey is 29 and tenth place finisher Michael Sarver is 28), but … Continue reading

Charlton Heston Dies

Legendary actor Charlton Heston died last night. He was 84 years old. According to news reports, the Oscar winner’s wife of 64 years was by his side when he passed away in the couple’s Beverly Hills home. No word on what caused his death, but it was no secret that the movie star had been diagnosed with symptoms similar to those of Alzheimer’s disease. (In 2002 Heston appeared in a video confirming he was suffering from memory loss and other “challenges.”) Heston will likely be best remembered for his chariot-racing role in 1959’s “Ben Hur,” in which he won an … Continue reading
