Underappreciated Disney Films: The Sword in the Stone

Over the weekend, the BBC’s current King Arthur reinvention television program, “Merlin,” held a Comic-Con panel. During the session one audience member asked two of the show’s stars, those playing the young lead Merlin and the stern King Uther, what was their favorite Arthurian screen adaptation. Both replied, “the Disney one.” While this says something about the distressingly poor quality of most Arthurian film adaptations, it also speaks to the enduring excellence of “The Sword in the Stone.” Yet for some reason, the 1963 animated movie rarely gets much attention, especially amongst its Disney peers. I can understand why some … Continue reading

The Sword in the Stone (1963)

Most of us are familiar with the story of the young lad Arthur and how he pulled a sword out of a stone to prove his worthiness to become the king of England. In “The Sword in the Stone,” Disney takes the tale a step further with animated effects and great characterization. Arthur, otherwise known as The Wart, works as a scullery boy in the castle belonging to Sir Ector. Ector’s son, the slovenly Kay, will soon become a knight, and Arthur is assigned to squire for him. It’s an honor, to be sure, especially for someone of such low … Continue reading

How Old Are Your Favorite Disney Films?

I have a special little cupboard where I keep all of our Walt Disney children’s classics. OK, it is a pretty big cupboard and it is loaded with both DVDs and VHS tapes. Truth be told, I started collecting Disney movies long before I ever had children. Heck, I was collecting them long before I ever met my husband! I love the Disney classics and even some of the more recent children’s movies made by Disney/Pixar and I love that my kids are enjoying them too. The funny thing about Disney movies is that I could probably tell you where … Continue reading

Child of the Northern Spring – Persia Woolley

“Child of the Northern Spring” is the story of Guinevere, who would marry King Arthur. In past stories, we haven’t learned much about Guinevere. She is portrayed as a high-spirited, fun-loving woman who runs off with Lancelot, and that’s really all we know about her. This novel seeks to give her a background and a personality, and explain how she came to be who she was. Her father was the King of Rheged, and they didn’t live in a palace, like most kings. Instead, they moved from place to place as his business required it. Guinevere grew up wearing breeches … Continue reading

Sleeping Beauty (1959)

One of my favorite Disney classics of all time, “Sleeping Beauty” tells us the story of Aurora, the beautiful princess born to a king and queen who had thought themselves unable to have children. Coming as a miracle, she was adored and doted on, and a grand celebration was held to commemorate her birth. All the good fairies in the land were invited to come, and each bestowed upon her a gift. Beauty, kindness, and a lovely singing voice were amongst the gifts, and the king and queen couldn’t be happier. But then the evil fairy Maleficent arrives, furious that … Continue reading

Disney Introduction to the Magic of Camelot

A few days ago I read a movie review here at families.com that brought a memory back from this summer. Being a twin-culture family, we live in one country but spend our summers in the other so that our boys get to experience both of their cultural roots. We live in Sweden but every July we spend a month in the UK at my mom’s holiday trailer on the Northumbrian coastline (North East corner of England). Some friends knew we were coming last year, and left a pile of Disney videos at the trailer ready for the boys to watch … Continue reading
