The Shaggy Dog (2006)

Disney’s latest incarnation of “The Shaggy Dog” takes a huge step away from the original movie which stared Tommy Kirk and Fred MacMurray. In the original film, young Wilby (Kirk) was changed into the titular dog by means of an ancient spell. The spell could be broken by an act of bravery. In this latest venture, Tim Allen plays Dave Douglas, a lawyer who spends too much time working and not enough time with his family. His daughter (Grey) has started rebelling (though nothing too horrible…in fact most of her energy seems to be channeled into protesting animal cruelty) and … Continue reading

Television Celebrity Deaths: Paul Benedict and Beverly Garland

Actor Paul Benedict died last Monday at the age of 70. Benedict is probably best remembered as playing Mr. Bentley, the English neighbor of George Jefferson, on “The Jeffersons.” Benedict played the character on the show from 1975 until 1985 with a briefly departure for the 1982 season. Benedict suffered from acromegaly, a pituitary disorder which gave him an over-sized jaw and angular features. The unusual looks allowed him to use his facial features well in comedy skits. In addition, Benedict also appeared films such as The Goodbye Girl, The Man with Two Brains, This is Spinal Tap, A Mighty … Continue reading

The Dodgers held a benefit game against the Yankees for Roy Campanella, whose career ended after an automobile crash left him paralyzed from the waist down. In celebrity news, Eddie Fisher became Elizabeth Taylor’s fourth husband … Continue reading

The Happiest Millionaire (1967)

Starring Disney movie staple Fred MacMurray, “The Happiest Millionaire” is the movie in which Lesley Ann Warren made her big screen debut. Playing Cordie Drexel-Biddle, the oldest child and only daughter of an eccentric millionaire, she brings to life the real Cordie, who wrote a book about her childhood memories upon which this movie is based. Mr. Biddle (MacMurray) is an unusual man to say the least. He teaches a Bible school/boxing class in a converted stable in the back yard, and a whole room of his house is dedicated to his pet alligators. Mrs. Biddle (Greer Garson) is a … Continue reading
