Christmas with the Kranks (2004)

When I reviewed John Grisham’s novel “Skipping Christmas” last year, I read some critical reviews of the movie “Christmas with the Kranks,” based on Grisham’s book. The critics seemed to think the movie was terrible, but I wanted to give it a shot for myself. You know what – I really liked it. Tim Allen stars as Luther Krank and Jamie Lee Curtis is Nora, his wife. They have one child, a twenty-three-year-old daughter named Blair (Julie Gonzalo) who has joined the Peace Corps and will be in Peru for a year. Christmas just won’t be the same without her, … Continue reading

Week in Review: November 26th – December 1st

Looking for some great movies to help spice up your Christmas season? We begin with, what I feel, is one of the best Christmas movies ever made. “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” stars Loretta Swit and is the story of some out-of-control children who show a fuddy-duddy town what Christmas is really all about. “Mr. Krueger’s Christmas” stars Jimmy Stewart as a lonely janitor who uses his imagination to visit the Christ child in the stable. “Miracle on 34th Street” is the Natalie Wood classic wherein a young girl, her cynical mother, and an altruistic lawyer learn that there really … Continue reading

Deck the Halls (2006)

The perfect Christmas movie uplifts and inspires, sometimes makes us laugh, often makes us cry, and always gives us the warm, fuzzy feeling of Christmas. “Deck the Halls” did absolutely none of those things for me. Matthew Broderick plays Steve Finch, the town eye doctor and also the chairman of the Christmas Festival. The town has been getting ready for the holidays and so has Steve, with his obsessive-compulsive need to organize everything down to the last speck. His wife (Kristin Davis) tries to help him see that they don’t need to be so uptight about the schedule, but he’s … Continue reading

The Santa Clause 2 (2002)

Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) has fully accepted his role as Santa Claus and loves every minute of it. He works well with the elves, he has a good command of the magic that has been given him, and he looks forward to Christmas every year. His son Charlie still comes to the North Pole and helps him out, but this year, Charlie’s having some issues and has ended up on the naughty list. To make matters worse, there’s a slight problem. There’s a Mrs. clause in the Santa contract. Scott has to get married by midnight on Christmas Eve or … Continue reading

The Santa Claus 3: The Escape Clause

I saw the first commercial trailer for this film today and I have to admit, I started grinning like an idiot. The first film in this franchise, The Santa Clause came out in 1994, an unbelievable 12 years ago. In that film, as you may recall, Scott Calvin is a divorced toy executive who is trying to spend Christmas Eve with his son Charlie. The disconnected dad is more than a bit startled when Santa falls off his roof in the middle of the night and even more so when he and Charlie finish delivering the presents – and find … Continue reading

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (1983)

Yesterday, Lauri reviewed the book “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” by Barbara Robinson. Today I’m reviewing the made-for-TV movie of that book, which is a must-see for me each and every holiday season. Our narrator is Beth Bradley, a serious-minded young lady who has a wide-eyed view of life and is learning to be a little cynical. She’s the daughter of Grace (Loretta Swit) and Bob (Jackson Davies) devout members of their local church. She and her brother Charlie attend Sunday School every week and are looking forward to the Christmas pageant, although Charlie really doesn’t want to be a … Continue reading

The Homeschoolers’ Advent Calendar: Christmas Science

Those who know my family well, know us as “the science people”. When we worked at a private school, we ran the science fairs. In fact, it was a science fair for homeschoolers that got us started in running a home schooling support group. My husband especially, is known for his fine command of explaining physics to preschoolers. So if you knew us well, you would not be shocked that we actually have Christmas themed science. I hope you enjoy these links, tidbits, questions and ideas about science and Christmas. NORAD tracks Santa Clause You undoubtedly have heard that Norad … Continue reading

Are Media Rating Systems Working?

In March families.com computer writer Adam West described video game ratings, as did parenting writer Niki Bradley, and everyone knows what movie ratings stand for, T.V. ratings are understood by most parents as well. Yet recently many parents and politicians are arguing that the ratings are not doing their job. The number one reason is that the ratings vary so much from media to media. Every media has different rating labels: E for everyone on a video game or G for general audience on a movie. Music doesn’t even having a rating system, just warning labels if the music contains … Continue reading
