Underappreciated Disney Films: The Rescuers Down Under

“The Rescuers Down Under” doesn’t stand out as much as other films in my underappreciated series.  When looking at the full catalog of Disney feature-length animated films, I can understand why RDU and its predecessor don’t get as much attention.  I could have chosen either of them for this column, but given that “The Rescuers” was popular enough when it came out to warrant one of Disney’s only three theater-released sequels, I picked the latter film.  RDU is also hurt by the fact that its release came between that of Disney powerhouses “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast.” … Continue reading

The Rescuers Down Under (1990)

“The Rescuers Down Under” is the sequel to the original movie, “The Rescuers,” although it came along thirteen years later. Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor reprise their roles as Bernard and Miss Bianca, respectively, and Bernard has finally decided that it’s time to pop the ol’ question to Miss Bianca. However, before he can get the words out, news comes down the wire that a boy has been kidnapped in Australia, and he and Miss Bianca must go to the rescue. Cody lives with his widowed mother near the edge of the Australian wild, in a place called Mugwomp Flats. … Continue reading

Bob Newhart Celebrates 50 Years in Showbiz

Talk about longevity! Bob Newhart is celebrating his 50th year in show business. For this accomplishment, he was honored by the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences on June 1 at the Leonard H. Golderson Theatre in North Hollywood. Fifty years – wow. What did Newhart have to say about his career? “I’m surprised it lasted this long, you know? I may have a future in this business. I don’t know,” said Newhart, in what I pictured is his typical deadpan but hilarious delivery. I have always loved Bob Newhart. I grew up with him in the ‘70s as Dr. … Continue reading

Cool Runnings (1993)

“Cool Runnings” is based on the true story of the first Jamaican bobsled team. Yes, you did hear me right – Jamaica has a bobsled team. This hysterical movie will show you how it all came about. Derice is a runner, and he wants to go to the Olympics more than anything on this earth. When he tries out for 100-yard sprint, a dumb fluke accident keeps him from qualifying. Not ready to give up, he hunts up an old friend of his father’s, a man named Irving Blitzer (John Candy). Irv ruined his reputation and his career years ago … Continue reading

All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989)

Think “Guys and Dolls” + “Heaven Can Wait” + “The Rescuers,” and you’ve pretty much got the plot of “All Dogs Go to Heaven,” a Don Bluth film. The sad thing is, I didn’t really care for either of the three movies I just listed, and I didn’t really care for this movie either. Charlie (Burt Reynolds)is a stray dog, a gambler who gets on the wrong side of the law. He also gets on the wrong side of the casino owner, Mr. Carface, who decides to rub him out. After the assassination, Charlie goes up to Heaven where he … Continue reading

Australian Ghost Ship is a Mystery

Last Wednesday, Australian rescuers spotted a 36-foot catamaran adrift about 80 nautical miles off the coast of Townsville, which is on the northeast coast of the country. But unlike other rescued boats, this one was a bit odd. Rescuers found no sign of the three-man crew on the catamaran, but they did find other odd evidences of life. The engine was running, the table was set as if someone were ready to eat, there was a laptop computer that was turned on, and all the boat’s electronics such as global positioning satellite (GPS) and radio were working. The rescuers do … Continue reading
