Underappreciated Disney Films: The Rescuers Down Under

“The Rescuers Down Under” doesn’t stand out as much as other films in my underappreciated series.  When looking at the full catalog of Disney feature-length animated films, I can understand why RDU and its predecessor don’t get as much attention.  I could have chosen either of them for this column, but given that “The Rescuers” was popular enough when it came out to warrant one of Disney’s only three theater-released sequels, I picked the latter film.  RDU is also hurt by the fact that its release came between that of Disney powerhouses “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast.” … Continue reading

The Rescuers (1977)

Bernard the mouse is the janitor at the Rescue Aid Society, an organization comprised entirely of mice and dedicated to the rescuing of prisoners, wherever they may be. Representatives from all over the world join together at meetings of this group and divide the assignments between them, forming a highly effective task force. You wouldn’t think so much could be accomplished by a bunch of rodents, but then, you underestimate! Penny is a little orphan girl who has been kidnapped by a crazy woman named Medusa who is in search of a giant diamond. This diamond is down a hole … Continue reading

The Rescuers Down Under (1990)

“The Rescuers Down Under” is the sequel to the original movie, “The Rescuers,” although it came along thirteen years later. Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor reprise their roles as Bernard and Miss Bianca, respectively, and Bernard has finally decided that it’s time to pop the ol’ question to Miss Bianca. However, before he can get the words out, news comes down the wire that a boy has been kidnapped in Australia, and he and Miss Bianca must go to the rescue. Cody lives with his widowed mother near the edge of the Australian wild, in a place called Mugwomp Flats. … Continue reading

Bob Newhart Celebrates 50 Years in Showbiz

Talk about longevity! Bob Newhart is celebrating his 50th year in show business. For this accomplishment, he was honored by the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences on June 1 at the Leonard H. Golderson Theatre in North Hollywood. Fifty years – wow. What did Newhart have to say about his career? “I’m surprised it lasted this long, you know? I may have a future in this business. I don’t know,” said Newhart, in what I pictured is his typical deadpan but hilarious delivery. I have always loved Bob Newhart. I grew up with him in the ‘70s as Dr. … Continue reading

Pet Kidnapping on the Rise

According to statistics from the American Kennel Club, pet kidnapping is on the rise. It’s a statistic that’s difficult to track, to be sure. Pet theft is categorized with other property theft in official police reports, so the AKC and other groups have to rely on anecdotal evidence. But law enforcement agencies agree that pet theft — especially dog theft — is higher in 2008 than in the past. In the first half of the year, the AKC caught wind of three times as many dog thefts as there were in the first half of 2007. Why steal a pet? … Continue reading

How Old Are Your Favorite Disney Films?

I have a special little cupboard where I keep all of our Walt Disney children’s classics. OK, it is a pretty big cupboard and it is loaded with both DVDs and VHS tapes. Truth be told, I started collecting Disney movies long before I ever had children. Heck, I was collecting them long before I ever met my husband! I love the Disney classics and even some of the more recent children’s movies made by Disney/Pixar and I love that my kids are enjoying them too. The funny thing about Disney movies is that I could probably tell you where … Continue reading

Pet Mouse Feeding

Your pet mice need a balanced diet in order to be healthy, playful, and happy. In fact, their diet needs much of the same basics a human diet needs! Your mice need carbohydrates: this is basically the main portion of the mouse diet. Whole or rolled oats, hay, stale whole wheat bread, cooked whole wheat pasta. Your mice need vegetables: vitamins and minerals come from fresh vegetables like greens, carrots, peas, and more. Some veggies (or too much of a single veggie) can upset the stomach and leave you with a very messy cage. Your mice need protein: this can … Continue reading

“Newhart” Sidekick Dies

His peers knew him as a “gentle, sweet person” who could also be “incredibly funny.” Now, that funny man is gone. Tom Poston, well known for his roles on the television shows “The Bob Newhart Show “ and “Mork and Mindy” died Monday night. He was 85. According to news reports, Poston, who was married to his “Newhart” co-star Suzanne Pleshette, died at home after a brief illness (the nature of his illness was not made public). Poston was born in Columbus, Ohio, but didn’t live there for long. He moved from city to city as a child as his … Continue reading

All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989)

Think “Guys and Dolls” + “Heaven Can Wait” + “The Rescuers,” and you’ve pretty much got the plot of “All Dogs Go to Heaven,” a Don Bluth film. The sad thing is, I didn’t really care for either of the three movies I just listed, and I didn’t really care for this movie either. Charlie (Burt Reynolds)is a stray dog, a gambler who gets on the wrong side of the law. He also gets on the wrong side of the casino owner, Mr. Carface, who decides to rub him out. After the assassination, Charlie goes up to Heaven where he … Continue reading
