The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

“The Princess Diaries 2- Royal Engagement” finds Princess Mia newly graduated from Princeton and returning home to Genovia to stay. She’s just turned 21 and is learning the ins and outs of ruling from her grandmother (played again by Julie Andrews). However, Mia’s return and upcoming coronation doesn’t make everyone happy. Viscount Mabrey wants his nephew, another rightful heir to the throne, to be next in line. So the Viscount alerts parliament to the Genovian law that states an unmarried princess cannot be made queen. Queen Clarisse (Andrews) and Mia try to convince the parliament otherwise, but are given 30 … Continue reading

The Return of the Dark Fairy Tale

When studying the feminist evolution of the Disney princesses I came to the conclusion that it was time for Disney to once again reinvent the fairy tale for contemporary audiences. It seems that might be happening, though perhaps not in the way I’d expect. In the past year or so I’ve read a number of reports indicating that one of the latest trends in proposed films is the “dark fairy tale.” Several studios are green lighting movies that take classic fairy tales and “de-Disneyfy” them, supposedly turning them back to their darker roots. Whether or not the true sources of … Continue reading

Get Smart (2008)

Would you believe … that this is a great movie with a fitting tribute to the original series, but a refreshing look at intelligence and comedy all in one package? Get Smart is a fun film that combines intelligence, sight gags and physical humor blend together to create an entertaining film that doesn’t take itself seriously and doesn’t ask the audience to either. Popcorn Humor I enjoyed the original series when I was a kid. It was fun and it was funny. Barbara Feldon was easy to admire and aspire to as the smart, savvy and beautiful Agent 99. Agent … Continue reading

Social Love?

In ideal situations, marriages are built around love. They are not prearranged or set-up based upon social status, political views, or financial means. To be success and healthy they should be built on pure and honest feelings. However, as we all know, not everything in life works the way that it was designed or meant to happen. While I am on a roll of discussing favorite movies, such as in my last article discussing Serendipity, I will throw another all time favorite out there Legally Blonde. In this movie, Elle is told that she is not the type of girl … Continue reading

The Prince and Me 2 (2006)

“The Prince and Me” left us at a bit of a cliffhanger, so it was nice to see that there was a sequel. However, one major difference exists between the first and the second movie – we lost Julia Stiles and gained Kam Heskin. When last we saw Paige and Eddie, he was preparing to become the king of Denmark and she was preparing for med school. As this movie opens, we see that she (Kam Heskin) is finishing med school in Denmark and simultaneously learning all the things she’ll need to know as queen. Eddie (Luke Mably) has settled … Continue reading

Miss Golden Globe

The 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards is scheduled for January 13, 2008 on NBC. Michele has already mentioned that Rumer Willis, the oldest daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, will be this year’s Miss Golden Globe. For the past 44 years, the Miss Golden Globe or Mr. Golden Globe (yes, there have been a couple of young men chosen to perform this duty) is generally the daughter or son of a celebrity. You may be wondering who else has served this honor then gone on to be a star themselves. Here are a few of the previous honorees you … Continue reading

Just Ella – Margaret Peterson Haddix

Usually, when we hear the words “and they lived happily ever after,” we think that’s the end of the story. The adventure has ended, and there is no more. Cinderella lived happily ever after with her prince, didn’t she? Well, didn’t she? In “Just Ella,” author Margaret Peterson Haddix explores the “what if.” Ella has gone to live in the castle preparatory to marrying the prince. Gone are the days when she would sit in the ashes or scrub the entire house for her evil stepmother – she is now the one in charge, and she’s not sure she likes … Continue reading

There’s More to Disney Movies than Animation

There’s no disputing the success of Disney in the animation field, and mention such titles as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, “Lady and the Tramp”, “Toy Story” and “Finding Nemo” and instantly you think of Disney. However Disney is multi-layered and there’s a lot more to the Disney empire than animation. Two major movie companies fall under Disney’s umbrella – Touchstone Pictures, and Hollywood Pictures. Between these two film industry giants, they have produced such successful pictures as “Sister Act”, “The Aviator”, “Pirates of the Caribbean”, and “Pearl Harbor”. There’s one box office success that’s missing from their list … Continue reading

Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967)

A friend recommended “Thoroughly Modern Millie” to me, saying that it is her favorite play. When I saw it listed on Blockbuster.com, I added it to my queue, excited to see it. I don’t know if it wasn’t staged quite right, or what, but I just wasn’t impressed. (Wow, this is starting to sound a lot like my review of “HMS Pinafore.”) Unlike “Pinafore,” though, “Millie” was filmed as a movie, with Julie Andrews in the starring role and Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing as supporting actors. Perhaps that should have been my clue right there – I don’t … Continue reading
