“Lady and the Tramp” Released from the Vault

If you like to play the Disney Vault game then I have some important news for you: one of Disney’s most famous love stories, “Lady and the Tramp,” was freed from its locked depths this month. I’m not sure how long it will be available, probably for a number of months, but if you’ve been waiting to purchase this film now’s the time to do it. Of course Disney does a bit more than just let movies out of the Vault; the company always dresses up the discs in fancy editions with special content; whether or not the content is … Continue reading

A Rose By Any Other Name… Might Sound Funny

What is the strangest name in your family tree? It’s not just the children of celebrities who end up with strange and bizarre sounding names. As you do your genealogy research, you may have come across some names that made you giggle, or laugh out loud. The census for the United States is a great source of amusing names. The purpose of the census is to list the total number of people living in the country, and the best way to do that is by taking down people’s names. It seems to me that, due to the vast amount of … Continue reading

Lauren Bush and the FEED Projects

I blogged about green models the other day, but I intentionally skipped over Lauren Bush. Lauren, the granddaughter of former President George H. W. Bush and the niece of former President George W. Bush, is both a model and fashion designer. As you might imagine, Lauren was born in Texas. She graduated from The Kindaid School in Houston then studied fashion design at Parsons The New School for Design and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. In 2006, she graduated from Princeton University with an Anthropology degree. Although only 5’7” (short in Model Land), Lauren signed with the … Continue reading

Prince Harry Preps for Trip to U.S. and “Survivor” Winner Preps for More Chemo

Prince Harry is prepping to horse around in the Big Apple this weekend. Only his plans don’t include his on-again, off-again girlfriend Chelsy Davy. Rather, the youngest son of the late Princess Diana will be hitting the polo field for a fundraising event for his Sentebale charity for African children. The polo game marks Prince Harry’s first-ever formal visit to the United States. While in America the royal spare will participate in the second annual Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic on New York’s historic Governors Island. The match will pit the 24-year-old prince against polo hottie Nacho Figueras. Despite the … Continue reading

The Woods name will live on! Golf phenom Tiger Woods and his wife, Elin Nordegren, welcomed a son earlier this week. Charlie Axel Woods was born on Sunday, according to Woods’ website, and mother and baby are reportedly doing “great.” The 33-year-old pro athlete, who lost his own father to cancer in 2006, celebrated the birth of his first son with close family members and friends, including his 20-month-old daughter Sam Alexis. Woods also announced that he plans to share photos of his new son on his website in the near future. SALMA HAYEK BREASTFEEDS A STRANGER’S BABY Forget about … Continue reading

Metallica’s “Death Magnetic” Leaked

Okay, if you cannot tell what I am talking about from the title, “Death Magnetic” is the name of the upcoming Metallica album, slated to be released Friday. But, as many albums have been (see below), the entire album was leaked on the Internet by pirates. How did it happen? It seems that a French record store started selling the albums early and before they realized their mistake, the damage had been done. (Photo Source Mishka Gaikin, listed as public domain on Wikimedia Commons) Metallica realizes that in this day and age, leaks are going to happen. Drummer Lars Ulrich … Continue reading

The Illusionist (2006)

I first saw the illusionist at the movies after reading a review of it and thinking it sounded interesting. The reviewer at the time said it could be ‘a bit slow.’ I’m not a fan of slow movies. When I saw The Illusionist, I could not believe anyone had ever made this comment. This film set in the 19th century captivated me from start to finish. A young boy played by Aaron Johnson encounters a magician, who sparks his interest in magic and illusion. While he is practicing a trick with an egg, comes to the attention of Sophie. Despite … Continue reading

Barbie Mariposa (2008)

“Barbie Mariposa” is another installment in the series of movies starring Barbie in various roles. This time, we’re meeting Mariposa, a butterfly fairy who is a friend of Elena’s, who we met in Fairytopia. The butterfly fairies live in Flutterfield, a land which is far away from Fairytopia. The fairies can’t fly back and forth to visit each other because they are in danger – evil monsters want to eat the butterfly fairies, and they can’t leave the safety of the lights of their village. Those lights were invented by a kind and beautiful queen named Marybella, and as long … Continue reading

She’s the Man (2006)

“She’s the Man” is a loose adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play, “Twelfth Night.” Amanda Bynes plays Viola, a high school student at Cornwall who loves playing soccer, and she’s pretty good at it. Her boyfriend Justin is on the boy’s team at school and tells her she’s just as good as anyone on his team, but the school budget doesn’t extend far enough and the girls’ team is cut. She thinks the girls are just as good as the boys and wants to prove it, but the coach doesn’t even want to let them try out and create a co-ed … Continue reading

Week in Review: December 17th – 22nd

We’ve had a lot of fun concentrating on Christmas here in Movie Reviews this week. Let’s take a look at all the goodies we found. First was “Christmas with the Kranks” starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis. Based on John Grisham’s book “Skipping Christmas,” it’s the story of a couple who decided not to do Christmas this year, only to discover what a silly idea that was. “Christmas in Connecticut” stars Barbara Stanwick as a journalist who learns that honestly really is the best policy, and that you can’t imagine a whole new life for yourself – you have … Continue reading
