Pet First Aid: Fly Bites

In some parts of the world, fly bites are a common problem for pets. Dogs — especially dogs with upright ears — are more susceptible to fly bites than cats are, but any pet may fall prey to a biting fly. Horses are often preyed on by stable flies (also known as biting houseflies). Fly bites generally aren’t life threatening — some first aid action on a human’s part is usually all the injury needs. Signs of fly bites can include: Inflamed ear tips and edges Crusty scabs Wounds on the ears that leak blood or (more often) serum The … Continue reading

Barney Colors and Shapes

My last review was of “Barney Fun and Games”. In addition to this great movie, Barney also has many other educational and fun films. “Barney Colors and Shapes” is a wonderful movie to add to your educational collections. The movie features the typical crew of Barney, Baby Bop, BJ, and the children actors. The movie takes place in the playroom and begins with Barney as a stuffed toy. He magically appears as the children play with him. As some of the children enter, it is said that one little girl is in need of help carrying her books because she … Continue reading

The Barney movie “Fun and Games” displays his typical movie pattern in that it features Barney, Baby Bop, and a group of children. The Magic School Bus: Catches a Wave (1994)

“The Magic School Bus: Catches a Wave” contains three water-related episodes designed to teach your children science without their even knowing it. That’s why I love this series – it’s educational and fun at the same time. The first episode on this DVD is “Wet all Over.” Wanda and Arnold are paired together for their science report, and Wanda wants to make sure to get it just right by using real water. When Miss Frizzle suggests that they go to Water Land to explore water, the kids think it’s great. But then she turns them into water themselves, and they … Continue reading

If you’re looking for a fun and entertaining way to teach your children about bugs, “The Magic School Bus: Bugs, Bugs, Bugs!” is a great way to go about it. Movies Week in Review June 30th-July 5th

Are you looking for something good to throw in your DVD player this week? We just might have something that will fill the bill. We started out our week with a look at “The Magic School Bus: Creepy, Crawly Fun,” which teaches children some basic principles of science in a fun, entertaining way. I always learn something myself when I watch these shows with my children. Then we learned about “Wall-E,” the phenomenal new film by Disney Pixar. You’ll be blown away by the effects and the charm of this film that blogger Heather Long called “Quite simply the best … Continue reading

The Magic School Bus: Space Adventures (1994)

We love watching “The Magic School Bus.” It’s a combination of science, physics, and entertainment the whole family can enjoy together. I admit, I’ve learned quite a bit myself. “Space Adventures”” is a collection of three flight-related episodes put into one. Our first selection, “Lost in Space,” features Arnold’s cousin Janet as a visiting know-it-all who’s determined to prove that her school is the best. Arnold wants to show her how cool it is to take a field trip with Miss Frizzle, and when an outing is mentioned, he’s sure he’s about to make Janet eat her words. But when … Continue reading

The Magic School Bus: Creepy, Crawly Fun (1994)

I can’t think of any other children’s television show that illustrates science so creatively as “The Magic School Bus.” You can get most of these awesome episodes on video and DVD to watch whenever you like. Today my children and I took a look at “Creepy, Crawly Fun.” It was creepy. It was crawly. And it was fun. The DVD contains three episodes. In the first, “Inside the Haunted House,” Carlos is trying to invent a new musical instrument that will really knock the socks off the competition at the band tournament. But no matter how he tweaks his invention, … Continue reading
