The Jungle Book (DVD -1967)

In February, Tristi wrote a fantastic blog about The Jungle Book and this week, Disney’s opened the vault to re-release the film on DVD just in time to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film’s release. The beauty of the Jungle Book is that the story itself is timeless and well done. Mowgli is an orphaned boy raised by wolves and befriended by many of the animals, save for Kaa and Shere Khan. Kaa, the great python, is more of a nuisance than a real enemy. He’d like to eat Mowgli, but then Mowgli would fill him up for quite … Continue reading

The Jungle Book 2 (2003)

At the end of “The Jungle Book,” we saw Mowgli lured into the Man Village by a beautiful girl with large brown eyes. As we begin “The Jungle Book 2,” we find that her name was Shanti, and she and her family have taken Mowgli in and given him a home. Shanti’s parents have done everything they can to make him feel more comfortable and welcome, and her little brother Ranjan practically worships him, but despite all this, Mowgli still misses his jungle life. It doesn’t make it any easier that he’s forbidden to cross the river – his new … Continue reading

George of the Jungle (1997)

Is it late at night? Are you hyped up on sugar? Then this movie is for you! George (Brendan Fraser) was lost in the jungle as a small boy and was raised by apes. (Yes, this is a Tarzan spoof.) When Ursula, an adventurous heiress, comes to the jungle in the hopes of having some real experiences before settling down in marriage, she comes afoul of a ravenous lion. Before she has time to scream, George comes swooping in on his vine and rescues her, showing that lion who’s boss! What Ursula doesn’t realize is that George and the lion … Continue reading

The Jungle Book (1967)

The Rudyard Kipling tale “The Jungle Book” is just a little bit odd, to say the least. But when you put it in the hands of a master like Walt Disney, and add some talking animals, and a groovin’ monkey king, you’ve got a hit on your hands. Walt Disney’s version of “The Jungle Book” features a kindly panther named Bagheera, voiced by Sebastian Cabot, who comes upon an abandoned baby boy in a basket in the jungle. He knows of a kindly wolf family who could do right by the boy, so he takes his bundle and leaves it … Continue reading

Most Controversial Disney Films Pt. 1

As an adult I’ve gone back and re-watched many of my favorite Disney films. They’re as wonderful as ever, but in some cases I am disturbed by the content I find in them. I realize that many of these movies were made in a different era, but part of me wants to believe that Disney was always squeaky-clean and welcoming to people of all backgrounds. In this two-part article I’d like to address how we might approach the controversial material in Disney films, both as adults and as parents. Here’s a rundown of some of the more controversial Disney films: … Continue reading

Who’s Your Favorite Movie Villain? Part Three

Continuing with the movie villain thread, another one of my personal favorites was Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus from Gladiator. In love with his own sister and having killed his father to obtain his title, he wanted to squelch Russell Crowe’s character Maximus so he could be in complete control of Rome. Joaquin definitely deserved his Oscar nod for this villainous performance (and he looked good while pulling it off!). Not all the villains listed on Entertainment Weekly’s top 50 were human. There were four animated villains – Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, Shere Khan from The … Continue reading

How Old Are Your Favorite Disney Films?

I have a special little cupboard where I keep all of our Walt Disney children’s classics. OK, it is a pretty big cupboard and it is loaded with both DVDs and VHS tapes. Truth be told, I started collecting Disney movies long before I ever had children. Heck, I was collecting them long before I ever met my husband! I love the Disney classics and even some of the more recent children’s movies made by Disney/Pixar and I love that my kids are enjoying them too. The funny thing about Disney movies is that I could probably tell you where … Continue reading

Growing Up in Africa – Les and Genny Nuckolls

“Growing Up in Africa” is a nonfiction account of a man and his two daughters who went to live in Africa for a time. He had been offered a job at a small college near the village of Kitwe, and so the family made Africa their home for a number of years. The book tells some of the highlights of their time away from their native California home, and while it is nonfiction, it reads like a book of short stories. Annie and Alicia are the two daughters, and much of the book is written from their perspective. They make … Continue reading

Warning for Disney Movie Club Members

When we had our first child, we decided it was time we joined the Disney Movie Club. It really is a great deal. Initially, you get three DVDs for $1.99 each and no charge for shipping and processing. Then you agree to buy five more movies within the next two years at the regular price of about $19.99 plus shipping and handling. The real beauty of this club is when a Disney Classic comes out of the Disney Vault, you’ll be one of the first to know about it. Coincidentally, The Jungle Book has recently been released from the Vault. … Continue reading

Tiger Populations Dwindle In India

Animal conservation experts believe that India may have less than 1,500 tigers left — that is half the population from just five years ago. Conservationists are performing a state by state census of tiger populations in India and expect to have final results in December. However, tiger experts are estimating that there are only between 1,300 and 1,500 tigers left in the country. Wildlife experts and government officials agree on the estimate, which is a severe drop from the 2002 tiger population — 3,700 tigers. If the census is still going on, how do the conservationists have this estimate? Technology … Continue reading
