The Cutting Edge (1992)

I love figure skating, I love comedy, and I love romantic movies. This release starring Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney had all of this for me.

Doug (Sweeney) is an Olympic hockey player. He's also a ladies' man and a loose cannon. While playing for his team during the Olympics, he takes a hit right to the eye and loses his peripheral vision, a career-ending injury for a hockey player.

Kate (Kelly) is an Olympic figure skater. While performing at the same Olympics where Doug received his injury, she had a downfall of her own - she and her partner flubbed it up, big time, and lost their chances for the Gold.

A couple of years have gone by since then. Doug has been contacting every hockey team in the nation, trying to reestablish himself, but no one wants him because of his bad eye. Kate has been looking for a new partner, but none of them will stay with her because she's demanding and temperamental. As a last ditch effort, Victor Pamchenko, Kate's coach, decides to contact Doug and see if he would be willing to train to be Kate's partner.

At first, Doug is lured by the idea of the money he'll be paid. He hates the idea of trading in his masculine hockey skates for girly figure skates, but as he gets the feel of the moves, he discovers that he loves it, and then the challenge and the success keep him plugging away at it.

Kate can't stand the idea that Doug is going to be her partner. He's uncouth, uneducated, coarse, and a free spirit. She has kept herself boxed up for so long, she's forgotten how to have fun, and Doug is a reminder of the life she wishes she could have.

As the Olympics approach, they each have their reasons for wanting to return and to do it right this time. But they will have to learn to work together in order to pull it off.

I really loved this movie and have watched it repeatedly. There are a few comments made here and there that you might not like for your family, so I'd recommend watching it beforehand to decide what you think. If you enjoy the movie otherwise, you can just zip ahead with your remote when you come to those parts.

This movie is rated PG.

I couldn't agree more!! I jut love this movie! My favorite part is when they keep showing Kate skating past Doug who is laying on the ice. All Kate keeps saying is toe pick!
