The Cutting Edge (1992)

I love figure skating, I love comedy, and I love romantic movies. This release starring Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney had all of this for me. Doug (Sweeney) is an Olympic hockey player. He’s also a ladies’ man and a loose cannon. While playing for his team during the Olympics, he takes a hit right to the eye and loses his peripheral vision, a career-ending injury for a hockey player. Kate (Kelly) is an Olympic figure skater. While performing at the same Olympics where Doug received his injury, she had a downfall of her own – she and her partner … Continue reading

Did the Olympics Inspire You?

While the Olympic games may be behind us now (at least until the Summer Games in 2012), the Olympic spirit may stick with you long after the Closing Ceremonies. And you don’t have to be an Olympic-level athlete to let the Games inspire you to better health! Olympic Inspiration Number One: introduction to new sports. It seems like they add new sports to the Games each year — one I’d never seen or heard of before this year was ski cross. But it sure looked like fun: four athletes side-by-side on a course that includes turns, jumps, and fast-paced passes. … Continue reading

Moonstruck (1987)

“Moonstruck” stars Cher as Loretta, a thirty-seven-year-old woman who is the daughter of Italian immigrants working their way to make it good in America. She’s engaged to Johnny, a stable businessman who will take good care of her financially, but she’s not in love with him. She’s old enough that she feels love will never come her way again –she’s a widow– and she’s all right with that now, thinking that she’s accepting reality. When Johnny must travel to Italy to visit his dying mother, he calls Loretta and asks her to go see his brother Ronny. There’s been some … Continue reading

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” is one of the best romantic comedies to come out of the last decade. Written by Nia Vardalos as a commentary on what’s good and not so good about being Greek, she also stars as the main character, Toula Portokalos. Toula’s family owns and operates a Greek restaurant called “Dancing Zorba’s.” Their lives revolve around food, dancing, eating, running the restaurant, eating, huge family gatherings, and eating. They’re a very tight and interconnected family, but there are times when Toula feels they’re a little too tight. Everyone knows everyone else’s business, and it’s just assumed … Continue reading

Ice Castles (1978)

Every so often when I blog about a movie, I get so wrapped up in the emotions I felt while watching the film that I just have to sit and sniffle for a minute before I can write. I loved “Ice Castles” to the point of silliness, and so pardon me a moment while I sit and sniffle. Thank you; I believe I can now go forth. I’ve mentioned how much I love figure skating and how much I love romantic movies. This one just hit the spot in so many ways. Lynn-Holly Johnson stars as Lexie, a sixteen-year-old girl … Continue reading
