Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 14:13-17

We are reading about the vision Nephi had when he inquired of the Lord to know the meaning of his father’s dream. We have studied this in several installments, as it’s very in-depth and he was shown a great many things. To my mind, this is a perfect example of the Lord answering a faithful prayer. He has told us that He will answer us when we ask in faith. Sometimes that answer comes later, and sometimes He answers with a great deal of knowledge, just as he did for Nephi. 13. And it came to pass that I beheld … Continue reading

5 Children and It (2003)

“5 Children and It” is a fanciful tale set during the first World War. It starts out very much like “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” Five children (instead of Lewis’s four) are sent to live with their uncle in the country while their father goes off to fight, and their mother goes to nurse the wounded. Upon arrival, they find that their uncle is eccentric, he has a housekeeper, and they are forbidden to enter a room. Sound familiar so far? However, then we branch off into differences. Robert, the middle boy (Freddie Highmore) is a spoiled child … Continue reading

Shadowlands (1993)

“Shadowlands” is the beautiful true story of C.S. Lewis and how he came to find love in a most unexpected place. Living the life of a bachelor, with his equally unmarried brother Warnie, C. S. (who went by the name of Jack) thought he had everything he could ever want. He was a famous and skilled lecturer, he had a series of best-selling children’s books about a magical wardrobe that acted as the portal between this world and another, and he was well respected by his peers. For the last little while, he’s been exchanging letters with an American poet … Continue reading

Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971)

I was raised in a household where witchcraft was an absolute no-no. Any form of magic was frowned on. I can understand this – it’s natural for parents to want to protect their children from anything that smacks of the Occult. But there are some forms of magic I think are just fun, and “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” is one of them. Angela Lansbury stars as Eglantine Price, a single woman who lives in a secluded house. This separation from the rest of the English village of Pepperinge Eye is perfect for her purposes – you see, she’s taking a correspondence … Continue reading

Who Are Those Dogs in … The K9 Advantix/Advantage Commercials?

One of my favorite TV commercials using animals is the K9 Advantix commercials with the little singing puppy. There’s one where he’s written to thank his parents for the package with the K9 Advantix in it. (Which stopped all the biting, because those “fleas, ticks, mosquitoes really bother.”) In fact, the commercial is titled “Camp” and you can watch it on the K9 Advantix site.) They have a new commercial with the little pup singing another song: There ain’t no bugs on me There ain’t no bugs on me. There may be bugs on some of you mugs, But there … Continue reading

Christian Book Distributor’s Bargain Bonanza

*sigh* All the money I’m saving by reading MaryAnn’s frugal blogs is being spent on deals! I’m almost ready to quit saving money on them. Not! I have this fantasy where one year I’ll spend nothing that isn’t absolutely necessary. Fortunately, I always wake up! I ordered today from Christian Book Distributors. They’re having a Bargain Bonanza. Here’s what was in my basket: Lucy’s Christmas Box – I loved the Chronicles of Narnia. Yeah, it was Disney-fied and Aslan was wimped down, but for the most part, it kept the magic of the original C.S. Lewis classic. We’ve collected and … Continue reading

Free Tattoos from Disney Movie Rewards

Cars was the best children’s movie of 2006. I don’t know of anyone who didn’t love it. My kids are crazy for anything that has to do with it. Trouble is, mom’s not too crazy about the price of licensed items. Here’s a real deal, though. When you join Disney Movie Rewards, you can get a free sheet of Cars temporary tattoos. We don’t do the whole tattoo thing in our house, but they make great stickers. All you have to do is join the Movie Rewards club. Then scroll down to the bottom center and click on “Take Survey”. … Continue reading
