avsdcacBased on the children's novel by the same title, "The Borrowers" is the story of a family of tiny people who live in the floorboards of an old house. The house belongs to the Lender family-Mother, Victoria (Doon Mackichan) father, Joe (Aden Gillett) and son, Petey (Bradley Pierce). The Lenders know things keep turning up missing in their house, especially things like dental floss and batteries, but they don't know why. Petey has a theory-he thinks they've got some sort of mice, and sets traps for them, but he's not at all expecting what he does find out.

Meanwhile, the Borrowers' teenage daughter, Arrietty Clock, (Flora Newbigin) wants to see more of the world outside. Her father goes out and "borrows" things regularly-she wants her chance too. Finally it comes. Father Clock (Jim Broadbent) consents to taking her and her little brother Peagreen (Tom Felton) out to "borrow." They do have a little bit of a mishap-she gets shut up in the freezer and has to come out the ice dispenser-but she thinks it was a wonderful day out, and she wants more.

Going to watch television in Petey's room that night, Arrietty is caught. Petey can't believe his eyes, but also his good fortune when he learns all about the Clock family. But there's bad news-the Lenders will be moving soon. Their aunt has passed away, and although they've been living in her house for years, they will now have to move. The house will be torn down, and that means that the Clocks will have to move, too.

The special effects in this movie are really something else as we see the Borrowers traverse the dangerous path between the sink and the fridge. There are some moments of great humor and all in all, this is a film you can watch and enjoy with your whole family. We all liked it here at the Pinkstons.

This film was rated PG.
