Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading

Glory Road (2006)

I’m going to state right from the beginning of this blog that I’m just slightly tired of all the movies that have been made about school teams that are in trouble, and then along comes a coach who tries something different, and the team makes it, and everyone is happy. That being said, and with the full disclosure that “Glory Road” is, indeed one of those films, I will proceed to also say that I did enjoy it more than most of those “other movies.” Josh Lucas, who always seems to play a background role or a sidekick up until … Continue reading

Take the Lead (2006)

I must begin this movie review with an apology to my sister. She’s been a huge Antonio Banderas fan for years and I’ve never really seen the attraction and told her so. However, after seeing “Take the Lead,” I must confess to some oo-la-la and I hereby publicly admit, he is a very nice-looking man. Banderas plays Pierre Dulaine, owner of a dance studio and professional ballroom dancer. He’s concerned about the fate of the youth who live in the inner city areas in New York City, and this concern is heightened when he sees a teenager vandalize a car … Continue reading

Take an Earth Day Safari or Barbecue in Uruguay

Nairobi tour operators are hoping travelers who want to embark on green vacations to celebrate Earth Day 2008 will consider visiting Kenya. Game parks there used to draw thousands of safari loving adventure seekers each year, but ever since the region was marred with violence following a post-election crisis visitors have been reluctant to tour local conservations parks. That means Kenya’s rich wildlife, from its rhinos to whale sharks, is now at risk unless the country can regain visitors. According to local officials, the deaths of more than 1,000 people due to riots and ethnic clashes prompted tour operators to … Continue reading

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

This quirky movie was by far my favorite out of all the films produced in the year 2006. Perhaps it’s because I’m an author, but I completely related to the story. Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) works for the IRS, doing audits. He has a bit of an OCD about his routines, from getting ready in the morning to keeping the exact time on his watch. He’s single and has no one to distract him from his patterns. Until one morning, that is, when he starts to hear a woman’s voice narrating everything he does. At first, the voice just says … Continue reading

VeggieTales — Gideon: Tuba Warrior (2006)

I’m a big fan of VeggieTales and we have most of the movies. “Gideon: Tuba Warrior” is new to us today, and I have to say, out of all the episodes, this is the one that has spoken to me the most personally. The lesson is on trusting God, and in its simple poignancy, the film truly reminded me of God’s love for all His children. First we see the story of George Mueller, a man who lived in England and ran an orphanage with his wife. They had no money of their own, but trusted God to give them … Continue reading

One Night with the King (2006)

I love the story of Esther. You may have guessed that, given the large number of times I’ve blogged on Esther-related subjects. (Links to these are at the end of this article.) So it should come as no surprise that I’m reviewing “One Night With the King” today. Beautiful costuming, lush sets, and gorgeous scenery accent this already impressive film. Tiffany Dupont stars as Hadassah, a beautiful Jewish orphan who has been raised by her cousin Mordecai (John Rhys-Davies). When Queen Vashti chooses not to appear at a banquet held by the king to rally support for the war against … Continue reading

The Fox and the Hound 2 (2006)

Disney has been acting very strangely lately. They’ve been going through their vaults, locating their most successful movies, and making sequels to them. Strangest of all – they’re finding movies that have a time lapse in them, and then making a movie to fill in that time lapse. Like how we see Bambi as a child and then an adult, so in Bambi II, we see what happened in that growing-up time. Well, Disney did it again with “The Fox and the Hound.” In “The Fox and the Hound 2,” we see a young Tod and Copper still hanging out … Continue reading

Duma (2006)

One night while driving through a semi-colonized part of Africa, a boy named Xan and his father happen upon an orphaned cheetah kitten. Knowing he’ll never survive on his own, they take the kitten back home and raise it, along with other animals they’ve collected along the way. Soon Xan and the cheetah, Duma, are closer than brothers and the thought of returning Duma to the wild is too much to consider. However, if left tame much longer, Duma will lose all his instincts and will never be able to defend himself. Xan reluctantly agrees to help his father return … Continue reading

Barbie in The Twelve Dancing Princesses (2006)

In this, the most recent release in the Barbie movie series, our golden girl stars as Genevieve, the seventh of twelve daughters born to a loving king and queen. Unfortunately, the queen has passed away, leaving the king alone to raise the children, but he’s done fairly well on his own. Each girl has their own personality and their own talents, and their days are spent developing those talents. Each afternoon they gather together to dance, a tradition their mother began. She loved dancing and even had a pavilion built outside the castle for that purpose. The king begins to … Continue reading
