Inside the Disney Limbo

After previewing “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” last week, I began wondering about the status of many other upcoming Disney films. While researching the movies Disney’s got on its production line, I discovered many promising titles (and some not so promising) that are currently in a state of limbo. A number of interesting projects are in various stages of halted production over at Disney right now. For today’s blog I thought I’d highlight some of these projects. “Enchanted 2” – All right, I’m cheating some here. The House of Mouse just announced that they plan to make a … Continue reading

The Enchanted Cottage (1945)

The 1940s was a great decade for melodrama. Take, for instance, “The Enchanted Cottage,” a love story about appearances and self-esteem. Laura Pennington (Dorothy McGuire) has returned to the village where she was raised in hopes of starting over. She’s a plain girl, and love has never come her way. She believes herself to be ugly, and no one has ever set her straight on that point. She takes a job as a maid in a cottage near her old home, working for the enigmatic Mrs. Minnett, played by Mildred Natwick, who is very good at looking enigmatic. Together the … Continue reading

And That’s Why They’re Called Classics!

Ever since the moving picture was first invented, Hollywood has given us great films, marvelous actors, beautiful actresses, daring stunts, and dazzling musical numbers. Unfortunately, many of these older films have been shoved aside in favor of newer, more high tech models. Don’t get me wrong; I love the movies of today. But there is just something about a whispered love spoken by moonlight, followed by a whiz-bang tap dance number, that nothing can touch. We lived in Magna, Utah, for a time when I was a girl. Near us, on State Steet in Sandy, was an old theater called … Continue reading

Swiss Family Robinson (1960) Movie Review

The Robinson family is moving to New Guinea. Unfortunately, their ship hits a bad storm on the way and they end up shipwrecked near an island whose existence is apparently known to no one. Not one to sit by and wait for a rescue that isn’t coming, Mr. Robinson takes charge of his wife, three sons, and the myriad of animals that the fleeing crew has left behind. They make their way to shore with as much off the ship as they can. This 1960 adventure movie chronicles their escapades as they struggle to live not only on a subsistence … Continue reading
