Radio (2003)

Cuba Gooding Jr. turns in one of his best performances ever in the award-winning film “Radio.” Ed Harris plays Coach Jones, the athletic director at a southern high school. While holding football practice every afternoon, he notices a young man go wandering past, pushing a shopping cart. He sometimes stops to watch the practice, but then goes on his way. Coach Jones can tell he’s disabled, but doesn’t know anything about him. One day Jones arrives on the field to find some of his players banging on the storage shed that houses the equipment. When he opens the door, he … Continue reading

Allstate Insurance has filed another insurance fraud lawsuit. It is the second one the insurer has filed this year. The insurer is seeking to recover a total of $6 million dollars from four defendants, (all of whom are from New York). Recently, the federal government did a nationwide takedown that resulted in 107 medical professionals being charged with Medicare fraud. The purpose was to prevent criminals from attempting to make money by filing fraudulent claims with Medicare for services or equipment that patients did not need or did not actually receive. This is the type of fraud that leads to … Continue reading

Amy Winehouse Joins the 27 Club

This past weekend, singer Amy Winehouse was found dead in her house in London. While I was not surprised to hear this news, I was certainly saddened. Winehouse, for all her demons, was truly a talented singer. She released her debut album Frank in 2003 when she was just 20 years old. Her style was influence by jazz, Sinatra, and girl groups of the ‘50s and ‘60s. She would only have one more studio album before her death, but it blew up the charts. Back to Black was released in late 2006 and hit number one on every chart except … Continue reading

Fundraising

Fundraising is an excellent way for organizations to raise much needed capital. We’ve all been subjected to fundraising in one form or another. We get requests in the mail and on the phone. Our children sell items for school and who doesn’t love Girl Scout cookies? A challenge for these organizations is keeping fundraising fresh and not putting too much of a burden on those who support them. I don’t know anyone who likes getting telemarketing calls at home, especially when registered on the Do Not Call List. Yes, charitable organizations and political groups are exempt from DNC rules, but … Continue reading

Focus on the Oscars: About the Academy Awards

The Academy Awards was first held on May 16, 1929 at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood. The ceremony, which was hosted by Douglas Fairbanks and William C. DeMille (older brother of Cecil), honored films from 1927 and 1928. Rather than being a big, glitzy production, the first Academy Awards was a private dinner held for less than 250 people. This year will be the 81st Academy Awards ceremony and will be held across the street from the Hotel Roosevelt in the Kodak Theatre. Every year, the awards have been broadcast, first on the radio, then on television (after it became … Continue reading
