Queen of the Summer Stars – Persia Woolley

“Queen of the Summer Stars” is the sequel to “Child of the Northern Spring,” reviewed here. Guinevere has now been married to King Arthur for a couple of years, and life at court is sweet to her. Her reservations about the union long gone, she loves her husband, but he doesn’t seem to share her emotions. He treats her as a friend and an ally, but he has never said he loves her. She badly wants to hear those words. Also causing her concern is the fact that she’s not yet pregnant. She wants to give Arthur an heir, but … Continue reading

Child of the Northern Spring – Persia Woolley

“Child of the Northern Spring” is the story of Guinevere, who would marry King Arthur. In past stories, we haven’t learned much about Guinevere. She is portrayed as a high-spirited, fun-loving woman who runs off with Lancelot, and that’s really all we know about her. This novel seeks to give her a background and a personality, and explain how she came to be who she was. Her father was the King of Rheged, and they didn’t live in a palace, like most kings. Instead, they moved from place to place as his business required it. Guinevere grew up wearing breeches … Continue reading

The Magic Tree House Books – Mary Pope Osborne

I first discovered “The Magic Tree House Books” by Mary Pope Osborne when my daughter outgrew the beginning readers and wasn’t quite ready for the older reader books. My librarian was very helpful and pointed this series out to me. The series revolves around Jack and his little sister Annie, typical children from our time who have a tree house on their property. The first book in the series is called “Dinosaurs Before Dark.” In this book, Jack and Annie discover that the tree house is owned by Morgan le Fay, who is King Arthur’s sister and also a librarian. … Continue reading

Belle’s Magical World (1998)

“Beauty and the Beast” was a smash hit for Disney, and I can see wanting to capitalize on that success as much as possible. This thinking brought us “Belle’s Magical World,” a movie comprised of a series of stories that supposedly took place between Belle’s arrival at the castle and the Beast’s magical transformation back into a prince. All of the characters are still household items, and there are more of them than ever before, making me wonder – just how many servants worked in that castle, anyway? I’m being a little more cynical than this movie really deserves – … Continue reading

Dealing With Friends and Family Who Have Hearing Loss

Here are some tips for better communication with a person with hearing loss. Use the person’s name so they know you are speaking to them. Children’s Fitness: New Global Health Threat in the Form of Video Games?

I’ve talked about World of Warcraft here before and I’ve addressed problems from concerned parents about the amount of time their kids spend playing video games versus how much time they spend on physical activities. Today, I want to take this discussion a bit further and I have my own personal reasons for maintaining my level of concern and this concern is something that I am working on here in my own family. My seven-year-old nephew loves to play this game and plays it at his father’s house a great deal. We can limit his game time when he is … Continue reading

Willow (1988)

“Willow” is about a small Nelwyn farmer who longs to be an apprentice sorcerer and ends up saving a world from an evil queen. Willow Ufgood’s world is one of magic, and one afternoon he and his children find a baby floating down the river on top of a leaf and branches that have made a makeshift raft. His wife immediately takes to the auburn-haired babe and even though he’s reluctant, the baby makes it obvious that she likes Willow as well. Later, Willow attends a festival in his village, where he hopes that the village sorcerer will choose him … Continue reading

World of Warcraft – Do You Know What PvP is?

World of Warcraft is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game that transports the players into a gaming world where they can interact with other players, take on quests and enjoy skill crafting, problem solving and more. My nephew, now 7, loves to play this game. Initially, his father introduced him to it in order to encourage reading. My nephew loves video games and he could read, but he often resisted doing it. His father thought that the game would be a great way to get him to read because the interface requires reading skill in order to accept and understand … Continue reading
