Hawaiian Location for Fourth “Pirates” Film

My second and final Hawaii week installment has Disney promising a swashbuckling adventure in Hawaii’s tropical paradise. Executives at Disney have announced that the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie will be filmed in Hawaii. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will begin filming this summer on Oahu and Kauai. It’s slated for release in 2011, likely in the summer. Few details are known yet for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” The movie is a confirmed adaptation, in places, of the 1988 historical fantasy novel “On Stranger Tides” by Tim Powers. The main plot point in the … Continue reading

Have You Checked Out IMDB.com?

I love the Internet Movie Database. I use it frequently as I’m blogging over in Movie Reviews. If you haven’t visited this site, you really should go take a look. When the homepage comes up, you can see at a glance which movies are coming out that week and which movies are doing the best at the box office. There’s also a list of what movies are coming out in the theaters in future weeks, and what DVDs are being released. It’s a great way to keep your finger on the pulse of movie entertainment. Off to the side is … Continue reading

Now That’s Love

And you thought you loved your in-laws… Super soccer star David Beckham is putting other son-in-law’s to shame with his latest move to prove just how much he loves his wife’s parents. According to new reports, the L.A. Galaxy star just presented his ultra-luxe mansion in Dubai to his mother and father-in-law as a token of his appreciation “for creating the woman he plans to spend the rest of his life with.” I’m not sure if I should cry or gag. Beckham reportedly bought the property for a mere $1.6 million in 2002 – but the waterfront villa, set on … Continue reading

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)

I’m so confused. I thought I was confused after the first Pirates when we thought Bootstrap Bill was dead, but he couldn’t be dead, because he would have to be undead, right? But then in “Dead Man’s Chest” we learn that he’s slowly turning into a barnacle on the Flying Dutchman. Whatever. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about the Pirates series, it’s to enjoy the films for what they are and to try not to analyze them too much, because they really don’t make a whole lot of sense. At the end of “Dead Man’s Chest,” we saw Elizabeth … Continue reading

Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

As is frequently the case, the first movie is the best. “Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl” is the movie that started a whole pirate craze, and for good reason – this movie is funny, romantic, adventurous, and just a little scary. When Elizabeth Swann was just a young girl, she and her father were out on a ship and came upon another vessel that had been destroyed by pirates. They rescued a young boy named Will from that wreck and helped him apprentice with a blacksmith in town. Years have gone by, and Elizabeth (Keira … Continue reading

Not a Good Disney Night at the Oscars

This year Disney’s various movie companies were nominated for around 20 Oscars at the 2007 Academy Awards held last night. I had hoped for a win for “Cars”, if only to justify my boys’ adoration for the movie, but unfortunately the talking cars were outclassed by the dancing penguins in the best animated feature category, and Melissa Etheridge’s “I Need to Wake Up” from Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” ousted “Cars” from the best original song category. From the movie point of view, I actually think that “An Inconvenient Truth” was better than “Cars” (don’t tell my boys I said … Continue reading

This Year’s Academy Awards

This Sunday is the 79th Annual Academy Awards. This year’s host will be Ellen Degeneres. I like Ellen – I think she is funny. I never cared to watch her talk show because I like her more as a stand up comedian, but I think she should fit in well as host. This is her first appearance as an Oscar host. As I started searching Families.com, I realized we had tons of blogs on Oscar’s previous hosts, previous winners, and this year’s nominees. Check some of these out: Blogs about former Oscar hosts: Chris Rock Chris Rock: Brooklyn’s Own Stand-Up … Continue reading

Trying to Keep within the Recommended Ratings

Whilst waiting for my youngest to come out from wherever he was hiding at pre-K (hiding because home is “boring” and pre-K isn’t!) I overheard a conversation between three of his classmates. Now in his pre-K class the age range is 3-5 years, Connor’s currently 3.5 years, and this particular group I was eavesdropping on are about 4 years old. His classmates were discussing the Pirates of the Caribbean and from what they were saying it was obvious that they’d seen the movie, and they were comparing it to Superman and Batman movies. I know that I’m a little overprotective, … Continue reading

There’s More to Disney Movies than Animation

There’s no disputing the success of Disney in the animation field, and mention such titles as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, “Lady and the Tramp”, “Toy Story” and “Finding Nemo” and instantly you think of Disney. However Disney is multi-layered and there’s a lot more to the Disney empire than animation. Two major movie companies fall under Disney’s umbrella – Touchstone Pictures, and Hollywood Pictures. Between these two film industry giants, they have produced such successful pictures as “Sister Act”, “The Aviator”, “Pirates of the Caribbean”, and “Pearl Harbor”. There’s one box office success that’s missing from their list … Continue reading

Upcoming Movies for 2007

There are a slew of upcoming movies that look promising for family viewing. Please bear in mind that these aren’t reviews so not all movies mentioned may be appropriate for everyone, and some will be most suitable for young teens and up. The first upcoming movie is “Arthur and the Invisibles which stars Freddie Highmore (from the newest incarnation of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”), Mia Farrow and the voices of Madonna, David Bowie and Snoop Dogg. It is the story of a young boy who journeys into a magical world in hopes of saving his family’s home. It is … Continue reading
