Phenomenon (1996)

John Travolta stars in “Phenomenon” as George Malley, an auto mechanic who has taken up gardening as a hobby. His life is simple and uncomplicated, and so is he. While not exactly dumb, he’s not a genius either. His love interest is Lace (Kyra Sedgwick) a single mother of two cute kids who has been burned by men in the past and doesn’t want to get involved again. George has no intention of giving up easily, however. When Lace brings her handcrafted chairs to his shop for people to buy, he asks her out, only to be turned down time … Continue reading

When Do We Draw the Line for the Media?

I was searching tonight for some pop culture news. Kim Kardashian got married, but I couldn’t care less. Minka Kelly and Derek Jeter broke up – boring. So, I turned to my old friend TMZ. Okay, Chaz Bono signs on for “Dancing with the Stars,” former NBA player charged with murder, and then I hit the supposed Steve Jobs post-resignation picture. Wow. The reason I say supposed is that the photo looks a bit fake to me, but if it is Steve, it is obvious he doesn’t have long to live. Everyone knows Jobs has had pancreatic cancer for at … Continue reading

More Questions about Jett Travolta’s Health and Possible Extortion Plot

As if it weren’t bad enough to lose a child, now the Travoltas have to deal an alleged extortion plot. Paramedic Tarino Lightbourne as well as Bahamian Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchombe, and lawyer/Senator Pleasant Bridgewater have all been detained for attempted extortion. Lightbourne drove Jett Travolta to the hospital and has told his story to “Good Morning America” as well as several tabloids. “It was me, him [John], and Jett. I’ll never forget this day. I saw him lean over and hug his son and kiss his son and tell him he loved him and I did everything I … Continue reading

Would You Allow Your Child to Wear a Purity Ring?

The Jonas Brothers wear them. So do some of the teens from “High School Musical.” Heck, there was even a point when Britney Spears sported one (what a joke). I’m referring to those mega-popular purity rings. The small silver rings are worn by young people to signify their commitment to abstinence. In other words the ring is supposed to help kids say, “I don’t,” before they say “I do.” The rings are part of an Evangelical Christian movement to encourage teens to make a “pledge of chastity.” According to my research, a father, who was outraged to discover that his … Continue reading

Hairspray (2007)

I didn’t have the faintest idea what to expect going into “Hairspray.” I knew it was a comedy and I had heard rumors that John Travolta was in it and wore a dress, but I wasn’t expecting what I got. He wasn’t just in a dress – he was in a dress, fat suit, wig, and full makeup, portraying Edna Turnblad, mother of the main character. Her name is Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonksi) and she’s a little on the portly side. That doesn’t keep her from bustin’ a move at every chance – she loves to dance and is pretty … Continue reading

Beautiful – Susi Gregg Fowler

In “Beautiful” by the husband and wife team of Susi Gregg Fowler and illustrator Jim Fowler, we hear the story of Uncle Jim, who is a gardener. He has a special talent for taking plants and making them into something beautiful. He not only has a garden of his own, but he hires out to care for gardens all over town. On his nephew’s birthday, he gives him gardening tools, seeds, and wire, and shows him how to plant a garden of his very own. As the plants are put into the earth, the nephew realizes that Uncle Jim isn’t … Continue reading
