It’s Walpurgis Night – So What’s That?

Six months ago I profiled Chernabog in my Halloween list of the most frightening Disney moments. Chernabog is a Slavic deity; not much is known about him, but as Christian traditions took over the pagan ones in Europe he was seen as a black god, even sometimes associated with or as the devil. The Night on Bald Mountain sequence from “Fantasia,” which contains Chernabog, is according to the conductor who introduces the segment set on Walpurgis Night. I’d never heard of Walpurgis Night, or at least it never registered as I watched “Fantasia,” so I thought I would research it. … Continue reading

A Night at the Magic Kingdom

Many of us had the fantasy as children: we get to spend a night locked in the mall, or zoo, or our favorite amusement park. The details might have differed, but the overall wish remained the same. We wanted to live in whatever counted as our personal wonderland. Now Variety Magazine reports that the Disney Company is planning a film which would play on that very desire. Forget about rides like Pirates of the Caribbean or The Haunted Mansion, it looks like the Magic Kingdom itself might be getting its very own movie. At this point the movie exists in … Continue reading

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian – A Great Sequel!

I was among the moviegoers that saw Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian on Memorial Day, its opening weekend. I usually don’t like sequels, but made an exception to see this one since my four year old son had been asking since seeing the “Fire Powa” commercial. Will loved the first one, so I figured he would like this one and I was right. This sequel follows former museum night watchman Larry Daley (Ben Stiller). The reason he is a former night watchman is his invention business has taken off. However, his “friends” at the museum need him. … Continue reading

Family Fun at the Museum… at Night

Hollywood’s new summer flick, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, has only been in theaters for 24 hours and it’s already on target to set box office records. Cha-ching! The movie’s producers could be happier. Ditto for curators at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. given that they anticipated that the movie — starring Ben Stiller, Robin Williams and Amy Adams — would translate into big business for the home of the real airplanes and artifacts featured in the flick. Not content to leave anything to chance, execs at the Smithsonian are running kid-friendly product promotions, including chances … Continue reading

All about ‘The Night Before Christmas’

Most of us are very familiar with the poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” but you may not know very much about it. First of all, no one is really sure who wrote it. It is usually attributed … Continue reading

Night at the Museum

Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) is looking for that “dare to be great” situation. His young son Nick is disappointed in him, his ex-wife is worried that Larry can’t provide enough stability for their son, and her new husband is a real go-to kind of guy that his son is starting to look up to. Larry just feels if he can find that perfect invention (one of his failed attempts at success was called “The Snapper” which worked like “The Clapper” but with snapping) or perfect job then everything would be great. But Larry also loves his son and doesn’t want … Continue reading

Using Monday Night Football for Tuesday’s Lessons

You’ve undoubtedly heard the expression ‘If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Join ‘Em’. Such is the way with football in our house. Football is a sacred institution in our house that one does not mess with. My husband is the commissioner of two fantasy football teams. And it wouldn’t suit the commissioner of such a lofty organization to not have a supportive wife–so yes, I have my own fantasy football team. (Which I then use to annihilate all the other men with which we play–but who’s keeping score?) The point is that Monday Night Football is as much a social institution … Continue reading
