Yoga Positions for Early Labor

The other day my doula visited our home to show us some techniques we’ll use for pain management during early labor.  Our goal is to do as much of the labor at home as possible – we’re more comfortable at home, and thus more likely to be relaxed here – and so these are some moves and positions Jon and I can do to help me get through the pain. If you get a book like The Birth Partner or other books about/that have sections on natural childbirth, these positions might be familiar to you.  I don’t know exactly what they’re … Continue reading

I Found My Grandmother!

I have been working on putting together my family tree. This is something I simply don’t have a lot of time to devote to, so I am doing it in small pieces. This week, I decided to see if I could locate information about a family member who meant a lot to me. To my surprise, I found my grandmother! I must admit, I am not an expert genealogist. If I were, I suppose I would have completed most of my family tree by now. Instead, I have scattered notes with scribbled, haphazard, portions of my family tree, and some … Continue reading

Help Me, Insurance Broker! You’re My Only Hope!

After becoming completely frustrated by my attempts to find affordable health insurance, I have decided to get some help. Today, I called an insurance broker in the hopes that she could help me in my quest to get insured. We are still at the beginning of the process. Could this work? Earlier today, I learned that the health insurance plan that I was recently approved for was way more expensive than I can afford. Needless to say, I was both disappointed and frustrated. If someone like me, who has a college degree, and who reads about insurance news every day, … Continue reading

Gluttony: Thy Name is Cat

After a week of intense holiday travels (we were on the road for at least 90 minutes almost every day), we’ve finally returned home. After doing so we discovered something that led to the latest chapter in Feeding Time in a Multiple Pet Household, or as I like to call it, Gluttony: Thy Name is Cat. Whenever we’re away for more than a few days I like to have someone check in on our cats. That was most important to me when Cole was an only feline child, as I knew he would really appreciate even just five minutes of … Continue reading

Another Mysterious Call from an Insurer

Once again, a representative from an insurance company has called me, and left a message that didn’t give me any clue as to what the call was about. This is especially confusing because the call came from the insurance company that we recently canceled a policy with. What on earth was this about? Recently, my husband and I canceled our health insurance policy. After doing some research about what it cost, and learning about the many things that it did not cover, it turned out that it was just too expensive for us to afford. Canceling a policy involves a … Continue reading

A Mysterious Phone Call from an Insurer

When an insurance company calls you on the phone, it is rarely because they have wonderful news for you. I cannot figure out why this particular insurance company called me, considering that I have already canceled the policy that I had with them. It is a bit of a mystery. My husband was going through the voice mail messages on our phone today. He told me that there was a message for me, from the insurance company that we just canceled our policy from. We had no idea what the purpose of this phone call was. The call came from … Continue reading

My First Pet

As long as I can remember I’ve wanted a dog. In preschool when I was around three-years-old we had the assignment to write out our Christmas present wish list. A dog was at the very top of mine. At first my wish for a dog might have just been the childish desire for one that many kids get, but my love of animals has never gone away. Unfortunately, my parents were never very interested in the work most pets, cats and especially dogs, entailed, especially as they knew that a child of my age wouldn’t end up taking any real … Continue reading

Home Business Spotlight: Blogger

I would be remiss to look at various types of writing jobs and not address becoming a blogger. We may not think this can be a salary earner but you really can make money blogging. However at the same time we need to be realistic and understand that you won’t be able to retire early as a blogger. Most bloggers do it for free and do it for fun. We enjoy sharing with the rest of the world. This reminds me of one of my favorite movies, “Julie and Julia.” It’s the true story of a woman named Julie Powell … Continue reading

What Names Run in Your Family?

You don’t necessarily have to be a genealogist to notice that certain names in your family tree appear more than once. Obviously, surnames are going to be connected to a lot of people. Often, you will find that a first name, or a middle name, is handed down from one generation to the next. What names run in your family? I come from a huge family. I have honestly lost count of how many cousins I have. Both my mother’s side of the family tree, and my father’s side of it, come from long lines of very fertile people. It … Continue reading

A Game For Your Surname

Sometimes when you want to break away from your regular family history research, you can find genealogy-related things to do just for amusement. For example, today I did a Google search for my surname to see what the other Berthiaumes out there are like. We are a diverse bunch, and I am sure that all of us share the common frustration that most people can not pronounce our name correctly, let alone spell it. Who are the Berthiaumes that I found with my Google search? I do not believe that I am related to any of the people that I … Continue reading
