Skipping the Grocery Store

Paying attention to the sales and then matching them up with coupons each week has really been saving us money. It has cut our weekly grocery expense about 60 percent so far. This week, we unintentionally cut it down more by having to skip the grocery shopping this week. Well, that isn’t completely true. I did send my husband out for a couple of things, while I got the little kids bathed, one after the other. As I do normally, I went thought the sales and made my list of items, noting which coupons I needed to cut (and where) … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for Jul 16-22

Did you notice a skip in coverage of the Pets Blog Week in Review? That’s because last week was my big vacation (I’ll be writing about that more this week) with Murphy and Wayne. Thus I wasn’t around to post last Monday for the week before. But vacation’s over so it’s back to the grindstone. Looks like Aimee covered a lot of interesting topics. (And I even snuck a few in myself.) Here’s what we covered on: Monday, July 16 We swam with kangaroos and author/publisher/pet rescuer Dindy Robinson in Part I of my interview with her. Aimee kicked off … Continue reading

“Dog” Out Of Jail, But On Tight Leash

I’m not a HUGE fan of Duane “Dog” Chapman who stars on his own cable reality show–“Dog The Bounty Hunter,” but since I am from Hawaii (Chapman resides on the island of Oahu) and once covered courts for a local television station there, “Dog’s” recent arrest is something I felt compelled to blog about (that and the fact that the guy has a ton of rabid fans who follow his every move). To get you up to speed, Chapman is a bounty hunter who made headlines in 2003 for capturing Max Factor cosmetics heir Andrew Luster in Mexico (“Dog” was … Continue reading

The Strike that Killed Twinkies

I woke up this morning in a good mood. I had been fighting off allergies or a cold, but I slept well last night. I happily came into work, looking forward to the weekend, the short workweek, and the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Then, the unimaginable happened. I logged into Facebook and saw that Hostess is shutting down. In case you aren’t aware, Hostess Brands, Inc. is the largest wholesale distributor of bakery goods in the U.S. They are the makers of Wonder Bread, Ding Dongs, Nature’s Pride (I love that bread!), Ho Ho’s, Sno Balls (which I never liked – … Continue reading

Summer Fun for Free

Summer is one of my favorite times of the year, not just for the great weather and the easy living but for all of the wonderful free fun that can be had, from free classes to free concerts, free food to free movies. You just have to know where to look. Skip the expense of the summer camp and take advantage of plenty of free fun for the kids instead. Do some research to find free events. Start local and work your way out. Find out if your town or city has a website or cable channel that lists free … Continue reading

Quick and Frugal Thermos Meals

How can you provide good meals when your busy week means that you are never home to eat, let alone to prepare meals. With kids involved skipping meals is not an option, and the cost of fast food meals would add up quickly. I’ve had to face this situation during the past two weeks. My ten-year-old son is in a big musical production. His rehearsals have been starting after school and going to seven or eight o’clock at night. With the last few rehearsals before opening night (the musical opens this Thursday evening), there are costumes and make up before … Continue reading

Taking Advantage of a Springlike Day

It has been unseasonably warm here lately. Today I think the high was 56, it’s February in Utah but please don’t tell old man winter, I’m ok with him skipping us this year. It was so warm today that I got a bit of a spring cleaning bug. Now I know this won’t last but I do want to enjoy it while I can. There are several things that I can do when the weather is nice that just makes my home seem that much cleaner. It is nice to have these little things done when it gets cold again, … Continue reading

We Need More Food Holidays

I’m not a very good cook, I only cook enough to keep us alive, but if I have something to celebrate, then I love to cook! I love cooking for a crowd on Thanksgiving or Christmas. I actually look forward to it, plan it out and dance around the kitchen, excited for everyone to come to dinner. The rest of the year, not so much, cooking is boring! In an effort to make every day a holiday and motivate myself to cook I decided to take advantage of some of the lesser known holidays. So dust off your apron and … Continue reading

How to Fit in Healthy Eating with a Busy Lifestyle

Is there anyone out there who isn’t super busy? Between work, family and home, it can be very difficult to fit in healthy eating. Here is an example, my daughter is trying out a competitive ice skating program. That means that we are usually at the rink at least four days a week. Wednesday is our long day, when we could be at the rink from nine in the morning until 1:30. Of course, the rink has a restaurant, and while it is conscious of offering healthier choices because it caters to a mostly athletic crowd, the fact is that … Continue reading
