Lindsay’s Flour Shower and Nia’s New Baby

I get the feeling a little flour isn’t going to stop actress Lindsay Lohan from wearing fur again. Animal rights activists tried to get the 22-year-old movie star to reconsider her fashion choice last night by pelting her with a flour bomb as she entered a Paris nightclub wearing a fur stole. A group of rowdy animal rights supporters reportedly showered Lohan with a bag of flour just as she was entering the famed VIP Room Theater with her gal pal, disc jockey Samantha Ronson. According to reports, Lohan was unfazed by the white powder and simply dusted off her … Continue reading

52 Romantic Movies You Either Love or Hate

Dale’s blogs about some of her favorite romantic movies (see “Favorite Romance Movies” and “Favorite Romance Movies-Part 2”) has inspired this next one from me. The idea took hold because I sympathized with a comment one reader, deedee1231, left on both blogs regarding the movie Casablanca. She wasn’t a fan. (Though she didn’t begrudge Dale for including it on her fave list.) Deedee1231 thought Casablanca was overhyped. (Though she also admitted she’d seen it so many times she was just plum over it.) I chuckled with sympathy when I read her comment. Though it wasn’t Casablanca I had in mind, … Continue reading

Raising Helen (2004)

In “Raising Helen,” Helen Harris (Kate Hudson) is a career woman first and foremost. As the executive assistant to Dominique, owner of a huge modeling agency, she’s always on the go, on top of things, and very in demand. Her nightlife is also busy, as she entertains clients. She makes time for her family, whom she loves dearly, especially her sister Lindsay (Felicity Huffman). Her other sister, Abby (Joan Cusack) is also important to her, but they’ve never really clicked. Tragedy strikes when Lindsay and her husband are killed in a car accident, leaving behind their three children. When it’s … Continue reading

Must Love Dogs (2005)

Sarah (Diane Lane) is recently divorced. Her husband stopped loving her, found another woman, and started a family, which is something he wouldn’t do with Sarah. She’s feeling hurt and disillusioned, and her entire family has decided to do something about it. They start bringing her pictures of single men complete with phone numbers, but she’s just not ready to take the plunge. Finally her sister Carol (Elizabeth Perkins) goes behind her back and sets up a page on a dating site. Jake (John Cusack) is also recently divorced. He doesn’t want to go through that kind of pain again, … Continue reading

Barefoot in the Park (1967)

“Barefoot in the Park” is a 1967 film based on the Neil Simon play of the same name. Robert Redford stars as Paul Bratter, a young lawyer who is waiting for his big break in the firm. He has just married Corrie (Jane Fonda) a vivacious girl with a live-life-to-the-fullest outlook. She compliments his solidarity and he brings her down to earth, or tries to. After spending six days at the Plaza Hotel following their marriage, they emerge into real life and move into an apartment together. Corrie picked it out without Paul’s approval – he’s never seen it at … Continue reading

Driving Miss Daisy (1989)

It’s no wonder to anyone who has seen “Driving Miss Daisy” that it received four Oscars. The script is wonderful, the acting impeccable, and the story, sweet and touching. Jessica Tandy stars as Miss Daisy Werthan, a widow who is determined to be as self-reliant as possible. She’s getting up there in years, but refuses to admit that she needs any help. While preparing to go to town one morning, she mistakes the accelerator for the brake and drives her car backwards up and over a hedge, landing in the neighbor’s yard. This inspires her son Booley (Dan Ackroyd) to … Continue reading

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” is one of the best romantic comedies to come out of the last decade. Written by Nia Vardalos as a commentary on what’s good and not so good about being Greek, she also stars as the main character, Toula Portokalos. Toula’s family owns and operates a Greek restaurant called “Dancing Zorba’s.” Their lives revolve around food, dancing, eating, running the restaurant, eating, huge family gatherings, and eating. They’re a very tight and interconnected family, but there are times when Toula feels they’re a little too tight. Everyone knows everyone else’s business, and it’s just assumed … Continue reading
