Music and Lyrics (2007)

“Music and Lyrics” stars Hugh Grant as Alex Fletcher, formerly of the pop band accurately named “Pop!” The band was a cross between Wham and Tears for Fears, and was wildly popular in the eighties. But Alex’s partner left for greener pastures, leaving Alex to wonder if all his glory days were in the past. His career starts to take a turn for the better when his manager (Brad Garrett) tells him that teen sensation Cora wants to meet him. She’s a big fan of his and wants him to write her new song. It must contain the line, “finding … Continue reading

Lohan’s Divorce Finalized, Winehouse Postpones Tour, and Uncle Kracker Arrested

Lohan’s Divorce Finalized Thankfully, for the sake of their children at least, the Lohans have finally settled their long drawn out divorce and custody dispute. Aside from Lindsay and her 19-year-old brother Michael, they also have 13-year-old Alaina and 10-year-old Dakota. The Lohans were about to settle on an agreement in 2005, but that fell through when Michael was sent to prison for drunk driving. Despite all the fighting and arguing over the years, state Supreme Court Justice Robert A. Ross told Michael and Dina Lohan “You have both demonstrated to me extraordinarily good judgment in resolving this matter as … Continue reading

Challenge for 2009

Yesterday at church we had some of the members of the Huskisson Scripture Union beach mission team come to join us for the day. What a great service! The first song our music team sang, ‘People Just Like Us,’ made me think of my daughter over the other side of the world but doing exactly the same as what we were doing, worshipping Jesus. As the song says, ‘All Over the World people just like us are following Jesus, we’re worshipping Jesus.’ At about that time our daughter was giving her testimony in a service thousands of miles away. That … Continue reading

Never Been Kissed (1999)

“Never Been Kissed” is a romantic comedy starring Drew Barrymore as Josi Gellar, a young woman who’s intelligent and studious and good at her job . . . but not very stylish or “with it.” She doesn’t pay any attention to her clothes or her hair, just her work for the newspaper. When the idea strikes to send a journalist into the local high school to investigate what life is really like for today’s youth, Josi is chosen to be the one. At twenty-five, she still looks young. She registers for high school, but she feels really dumb about the … Continue reading

Neil Young Gets His Own Spider

Hey, don’t step on that spider! It might be a Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi. A what? Yes, it is true – rocker Neil Young has had a spider named after him. Jason Bond, a biologist at East Carolina University, has discovered a new species of the trapdoor spider. When you discover a new species, you get the honor of naming it. Bond’s favorite musician is Neil Young, so voila – the Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi was born. Bond explained that while there are strict rules about how you name your new species, you could use any name you like as long as you follow … Continue reading

Week in Review: February 4th-9th

We had a really fun week here in Movies. Can’t decide what to rent? Take a look at the following and see what appeals to you. “Corrina, Corrina” stars Whoopi Goldberg and tells of the way one incredible housekeeper changed the lives of a widower and his daughter. A heartfelt and deeply touching movie that addresses loss and racism. Amanda Bynes stars in “She’s the Man,” a comedy about a girl who pretends to be her twin brother in order to play on the boys’ soccer team. She wasn’t planning to fall in love with her roommate, though. “Must Love … Continue reading

Amy Winehouse…Britain’s Britney?

Amy Winehouse is a very talented songstress, but lately, just like Britney Spears, her private life has begun to overshadow her talent. Her first album was nominated for the Mercury Prize, the music award for Best Album in the United Kingdom. Her second album Back to Black has sold almost a million and a half copies. Yet, with all that success, her personal life seems to be a mess. It has long been suspected that she and husband Blake Fielder-Civil have a problem with drugs. Winehouse herself sang a song that contained the lyrics “They’re tryin to make me go … Continue reading

Clay Aiken – Measure of a Man

I may have given you the impression that I’m a Clay Aiken fan. Well, I am! He came out of nowhere to come in second in the American Idol competition, and has outsold Rueben Studdard who did take home the title. With “Measure of a Man,” we have Clay’s debut album. When Clay was getting ready to release this album, producer Clive Davis wanted to title it simply “Clay Aiken.” But Clay wanted the title to convey more of a meaning and a message, rather than just an artist’s name, and he pushed for the album to be called “Measure … Continue reading

Big Girls Unite

Years ago the rap artist Sir Mix-A-Lot had a hit with the song “I Like Big Butts.” It was an ode to females who had large behinds. The song’s lyrics included phrases that applauded women who didn’t feel the need to loose weight in their “trunks.” Looking back, I could definitely see why some in the music industry, particularly the ones associated with Sir Mix-A-Lot’s record label, said the song helped boost the self-esteem of women who would ordinarily be ostracized for carrying extra weight in their backsides. Fast forward to 2007 and another song is getting the same recognition … Continue reading

God’s Will: On the Road of Life

While on the telephone with my aunt, she shared with me an inspirational passage from a book she’s been reading from Karen Kingsbury’s Redemption series called Reunion. The character paints this picture of turning our will over to God like being a passenger in a car and allowing God to drive. Though we might not know whether He’ll go left or right, we know in the end we’ll arrive at our destination if we let him drive. I was encouraged by the excerpt she read since it helped me put perspective on what it means to allow the will of … Continue reading
