The Sea, the Storm, and the Mangrove Tangle – Lynne Cherry

This is a non-fiction nature book for children, written with the intent of educating children and their parents about an endangered form of plant life, the mangrove tree. As we proceed through the pages, we see how many animal species are dependent on the tree for their own survival. We begin with a flock of pelicans landing on a mangrove island. As they settle in the branches, they knock off one of the seeds, known as a propagule, and it falls into the sea and is swept away until it reaches a lagoon. There it takes root and begins to … Continue reading

King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub – Audrey Wood

King Bidgood has been in the bathtub for a very long time, and no one can get him out. The page calls for help and tells the people of the court that he needs suggestions. But instead, the king invites the knight into the tub, and they battle there, with tiny battleships and armed guards standing on the edge of the tub. The page pours in more water. Next to try to lure the king … Continue reading

King George and the Ducky (2000)

When I first heard that the folks at VeggieTales were going to do the story of Bathsheba, I thought their brains must be the size of peas. How would you tell that story in a way that is appropriate for children? Well, I should have had a little more faith. They not only did it, but they did it very well. Larry the Cucumber plays King George, a man who … Continue reading

VeggieTales — Gideon: Tuba Warrior (2006)

I’m a big fan of VeggieTales and we have most of the movies. “Gideon: Tuba Warrior” is new to us today, and I have to say, out of all the episodes, this is the one that has spoken to me the most personally. The lesson is on trusting God, and in its simple poignancy, the film truly reminded me of God’s love for all His children. First we see the story of George Mueller, a man who lived in England and ran an orphanage with his wife. They had no money of their own, but trusted God to give them … Continue reading

Lord of the Beans (2005)

Those rascally vegetables have done it again – pulled off a hysterical spoof of a blockbuster movie, “Lord of the Rings.” But in this version, there were powerful beans created, beans that would give the owners clothes, food, and power, and one bean with the power of them all. The fate of those first beans was pretty tragic – they got eaten. But the last bean ended up in the hands of a Flobbit named Billboy Baggypants, and then passed down to his nephew, Toto. Toto saw the effect the bean had on his uncle, how he used it and … Continue reading
