52 Romantic Movies You Either Love or Hate

Dale’s blogs about some of her favorite romantic movies (see “Favorite Romance Movies” and “Favorite Romance Movies-Part 2”) has inspired this next one from me. The idea took hold because I sympathized with a comment one reader, deedee1231, left on both blogs regarding the movie Casablanca. She wasn’t a fan. (Though she didn’t begrudge Dale for including it on her fave list.) Deedee1231 thought Casablanca was overhyped. (Though she also admitted she’d seen it so many times she was just plum over it.) I chuckled with sympathy when I read her comment. Though it wasn’t Casablanca I had in mind, … Continue reading

Tristi’s Favorite Christmas Movies

It was Thanksgiving yesterday, and that means Christmas movies! I always kickstart my holiday season on Thanksgiving night by watching a Christmas movie, and at least once a week until the Big Day arrives, I watch another. Christmas movies are a wonderful way to bring the joy of the season into our homes. In no particular order, here are the films I watch every year, without fail. 1. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. The Herdsmans are the worst behaved kids in the whole town. When they catch word that the local church serves refreshments, they start attending, and they even … Continue reading

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)

I stayed up late last night watching “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” and was once again awe-struck at what a good actor Jimmy Stewart was. This film is a masterpiece of acting. Mr. Jim Taylor has been pulling the strings in his state’s senate for years. He bought the Governor his seat and has been arranging the senators for longer than that. When his appointed patsy unexpectedly passes away, he needs a new one, and fast. He tells the Governor who to appoint, but the public reaction is such that the Governor doesn’t dare proceed. Instead, he appoints the man … Continue reading

Hollywood Icons Live On

He’s an Academy Award-winner whose mark on Hollywood is still evident today. Actor Jimmy Stewart will be honored with a stamp bearing his face on Friday and you can join in on the festivities. The U.S. Postal Service will officially release the new Jimmy Stewart stamp at ceremonies in Pennsylvania and Hollywood. The Pennsylvania ceremony will be held at the Jimmy Stewart Museum in Indiana, the actor’s hometown. The other will be held at Universal Studios in Hollywood. The Postal Service first announced that Stewart would be gracing a stamp last October. The picture on the stamp is based on … Continue reading

Harvey (1950)

Earlier today I confessed my deep and abiding love of bunny rabbits. It’s only natural, then, that I should love this Jimmy Stewart classic. Stewart portrays a gentle-mannered man named Elwood P. Dowd who lives with his sister and his niece. He’s a relatively stable individual in every way but one – he thinks he has an invisible friend. But this would not be an ordinary invisible friend – this would be a pooka, which is, by translation, a mischievous magical creature commonly found in Celtic mythology. This particular pooka is a six-foot tall (oh, pardon. I err.) A six-foot-three-and-a-half-inch … Continue reading

DJangos $5.99 Previously-Owned DVD Sale

We watch tons of movies in our house. Right now, Treasure Island is blaring in the family room. It’s a rare day that someone in the house is not watching a movie. We don’t watch very much television because, frankly, my 12 year old doesn’t need to know what Cialis is for. With movies, we have a lot more control over what they’re seeing. We are huge fans of Blockbuster Online, and definitely get our money’s worth. Last year we watched over three hundred movies! But sometimes you really want to have the DVD itself. Favorite traditions such as It’s … Continue reading

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) Movie Review

George Bailey, in a stellar performance by Jimmy Stewart, is a dreamer with big plans who has his whole wonderful life planned out. But, as usual, things don’t go according to plan. His father dies and he is all that stands between the whole town being held in monopoly by the wicked Mr. Potter. Taking on the weight of the world, he makes the best of it, investing in people rather than large returns at the Bailey family-run Savings & Loan. When the stock market crashes on the day he is to leave for his honeymoon, Bailey and his new … Continue reading
