I Could Never Be Your Woman (2007)

“I Could Never Be Your Woman” is a sassy movie about an over-forty television writer named Rosie (Michelle Pfeiffer) who is looking for a new actor to fill in a spot on her show, “You Go Girl.” All the applicants are terrible until one young man walks in. His name is Adam (Paul Rudd) and he’s a natural. He’s quirky, he’s funny, and he gets the job. It’s not long until he’s stealing every scene he’s in, and he’s also stealing something else – Rosie’s heart. He takes her to a club and his outrageous sense of humor is very … Continue reading

It’s the Small Things That Sometimes Mean the Most

Photo by w1n → in Flowers There are moments in a marriage where a very small thing means so much. This past Wednesday I attended a Bible study at my church. It’s a new series on how to stay in love in marriage. The pastor who was leading it shared a story about what may seem to us an insignificant moment, but to him deepened his love for his wife even greater. I had the same kind of moment as well. It was on Monday when my husband and I spent the day at Children’s Hospital. Our 12-year-old son had … Continue reading

Adding Insult to Injury

How low can you go? Imagine the joy associated with conceiving and carrying triplets to term, then dealing with the unspeakable horror of never getting to see, speak or smother them with love. Welcome to Abbie Dorn’s life. The 34-year-old mother of healthy 5-year-old triplets suffered severe brain damage in June 2006 when a doctor accidentally cut her uterus during delivery. Dorn lost a tremendous amount of blood thanks to the doctor’s mistake. In addition, her heart stopped on the delivery table, but when doctors tried to resuscitate her the defibrillator they used malfunctioned and Dorn’s brain suffered major trauma … Continue reading

Not Really One of My Relatives

Don’t you just hate it when you get a bunch of spam email, that fills up your inbox? I’m not sure what about it annoys me the most: the little bit of extra time it takes to delete it, or the disappointment I feel when I discover that it wasn’t an email from a friend or relative after all. Recently, I got a spam email from a bank that had a sum of money waiting for me, left there by a distant relative. If only that were true! We all have heard about the typical email scams that have been … Continue reading

Tracking Chip Health Fears

My cat Cole has a tracking chip. He came with it; many shelters and rescues now automatically implant them as further insurance that the pets they place will stay with those homes forever. Chihiro doesn’t have the chip; her rescue didn’t follow the practice for whatever reason, and we aren’t too concerned about it. The cost hasn’t seemed worth it because she’s rarely in situations where she could run away. I’d be open to putting a chip on her, though, if I ever felt there might be a serious risk of losing her. But one woman in Cambridge, Massachusetts now … Continue reading

Boy Gets Revenge on “Bad Dad”

Subtitle: Pi*sing off kids comes with consequences. Here’s a story that may make you think twice about the way you treat your kids: UK resident William Ireland has so much disdain for his father that even when the elderly man died he couldn’t bury his hatred. Rather than let bygones be bygones, William cremated his old man, and then sold his father’s ashes on eBay. In the product description portion of the online auction site William wrote: “Here are the ashes of my father, Kenneth Ireland, an adulterer who left a wife, two children and just £17 in her pocket. … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review – February 18th – 23rd

It’s been a little quiet here in Movies this week, but every movie I reviewed was a winner–you can’t go wrong with any of my selections this time around. First, I really enjoyed “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Starring Will Smith as a man who can’t seem to support his family, try though he may, you’ll be inspired by our main character’s determination and drive. He rose above his poverty-stricken life to become one of the most successful stock brokers in our nation’s history. “I Could Never Be Your Woman” stars Michelle Pfeiffer as a mature television writer who gets tangled … Continue reading

What of Michelle Williams and Ledger’s Other Loves?

Less than 24 hours after Heath Ledger’s former fiancée Michelle Williams and the couple’s 2-year-old daughter Matilda arrived at their Brooklyn home a growing collection of stuffed toys, flowers and candles has sprouted up near the entrance to their brownstone. And in the hour since a New York funeral home director confirmed that memorial arrangements have been finalized for the 28-year-old actor found dead in his New York City apartment Tuesday paparazzi have once again gathered around Williams’ home—-the same one she and Ledger shared until they split last September. Regardless of your indifference for pop culture and entertainment “news” … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review: December 31st-January 5th

Looking for a great movie? Want to know what I think about the movies I’ve seen lately? You’ve come to the right place. I really enjoyed “Hairspray.” Tracy Turnblad, a portly teenager with an obsession for dancing, auditions to be on the “Corny Collins” show and ends up bringing an end to segregation on Corny’s stage. Seeing John Travolta wearing a dress and a fat suit was absolutely hysterical and the acting was well done – this movie is well worth your time. “Selena” has always been a favorite of mine. The true story of the dazzling Tejano pop star, … Continue reading

The Mysterious Benedict Society – Trenton Lee Stewart

Reynie Muldoon is an orphan, but he doesn’t feel particularly bad about it because he’s never known anything different. He lives in a large orphanage filled with children who ignore him, and his only friend is his tutor. She’s a kindly older woman who has taken Reynie into her heart, and it’s a good thing, too, otherwise no one would love him at all. One morning while reading the paper, they spy an ad for children of unusual abilities. Just what these abilities are supposed to be, the ad doesn’t say, but Reynie is curious. He decides to go in … Continue reading
