Hoodwinked: The Retelling of a Classic

People who are ready to compare the animation of this film to films such as “Toy Story” and “Shrek” might be disappointed. However, beneath the somewhat lackluster artistic effort lies a brave attempt to put a new spin on a very old tale. Hoodwinked follows the age old tale of “Little Red Riding Hood” and we all know what happened there, right? The film plays on the fact that the characters within the story just really can’t agree on how the whole shebang went down and how exactly Granny’s recipe was stolen, which happens to be the inciting incident for … Continue reading

Celebrity Milestones—A New Bride, A New Job, and More

A NEW BRIDE Growing up my brothers and I would occasionally watch “Full House.” The sitcom that catapulted the Olsen twins to fame stuck around for eight seasons and had a loyal following. But, I’ll be honest; while the rest of the country was going gaga over Michelle Tanner (played by the Olsen’s) I thought Jodie Sweetin (who played middle daughter Stephanie) was infinitely more appealing. She was cute… had great hair… and did a great job delivering her lines (as limited as they may have been). Now Sweetin is all grown up and is (as of last week) a … Continue reading

Tarzan (1999)

A young family comprised of a husband, wife, and baby boy are forced to flee their burning ship and escape in a life boat. Coming ashore in a jungle region, they make a home for themselves by building a rather nice tree house and are determined to make the most of their lives together. But then along comes Sabor, the huge jungle cat, and kills both mother and father. The child was asleep under a blanket, and so escaped the attack. Nearby, Kala, a female gorilla voiced by Glenn Close, is mourning the loss of her own son. Sabor took … Continue reading

Toy Story (1995)

What if toys came to life when their owners’ backs were turned? What if they had lives of their own that they lived while their owners were at school or asleep? This is the premise of the hit Pixar film, “Toy Story.” Andy is an imaginative little boy who loves cowboys. His favorite toy is a Woody doll, a cowboy dressed in a vest and hat. Andy has a cowboy bedspread, cowboy posters on his walls, and he spends most of his playtime pretending that Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is a sheriff who saves all the other toys from … Continue reading

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

“The Princess Diaries 2- Royal Engagement” finds Princess Mia newly graduated from Princeton and returning home to Genovia to stay. She’s just turned 21 and is learning the ins and outs of ruling from her grandmother (played again by Julie Andrews). However, Mia’s return and upcoming coronation doesn’t make everyone happy. Viscount Mabrey wants his nephew, another rightful heir to the throne, to be next in line. So the Viscount alerts parliament to the Genovian law that states an unmarried princess cannot be made queen. Queen Clarisse (Andrews) and Mia try to convince the parliament otherwise, but are given 30 … Continue reading
