Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)

“Homeward Bound” is one of my children’s favorite movies. It’s the story of Shadow, Chance, and Sassy, the pets belonging to the three Seaver children. Shadow is the older, wiser dog, voiced by Don Ameche. Sassy (Sally Field) is a Himalayan cat, and she truly lives up to her name, the sassy comments flying like fur. (Forgive me for that one.) Chance (Michael J. Fox) is a mongrel, the newest addition to the family. He’s been in animal control clinics and dog pounds several times in his life. He’s a dog of the streets, and because of this, has a … Continue reading

Karim the Cross-Country Cat

It’s like many movies I watched growing up: The Austrian Times reports that a domesticated cat did what many invading armies have failed to do, travel 2,000 miles across Russia all on its own. Two years ago the owners of Karim, a gray house cat, moved from their home in Uzbekistan to Liska, Russia. (And they were leaving Sunday, so…) However, we decided there was still a way we could spend time with animals and keep cool doing it: at an afternoon matinee showing of Evan Almighty. I must admit, … Continue reading

Enjoy a Classic Movie and a Frugal Family Night

It’s movie night at the Anderson household. Last Sunday, we rented Barnyard and The Land Before Time and spent a little more than six dollars. The kids watched the first movie for about twenty minutes before they became bored and started throwing popcorn at each other. This afternoon I took my daughter shopping at Target where I found Charlotte’s Web and several other classic movies on sale for $6.50. On the shelf next to them were dozens of digitally animated, celebrity-ridden, overly advertised Disney movies. As I looked at the fancy covers of all of the hit Disney movies I … Continue reading
