I Could Never Be Your Woman (2007)

“I Could Never Be Your Woman” is a sassy movie about an over-forty television writer named Rosie (Michelle Pfeiffer) who is looking for a new actor to fill in a spot on her show, “You Go Girl.” All the applicants are terrible until one young man walks in. His name is Adam (Paul Rudd) and he’s a natural. He’s quirky, he’s funny, and he gets the job. It’s not long until he’s stealing every scene he’s in, and he’s also stealing something else – Rosie’s heart. He takes her to a club and his outrageous sense of humor is very … Continue reading

Waitress (2007)

“Waitress” is a quirky movie about a girl named Jenna (Keri Russell) who is married to an abusive husband. When she finds out she’s pregnant, she doesn’t want the baby. She’s had plans to leave Earl (Jeremy Sisto) but the baby will cut into her plans. She doesn’t want an abortion or to give the child up – she plans to raise it – but she’s not happy about it. She works in a pie diner and is the best pie cook in the place. Whenever she’s feeling a strong emotion, she imagines a pie to go with it and … Continue reading

Hairspray (2007)

I didn’t have the faintest idea what to expect going into “Hairspray.” I knew it was a comedy and I had heard rumors that John Travolta was in it and wore a dress, but I wasn’t expecting what I got. He wasn’t just in a dress – he was in a dress, fat suit, wig, and full makeup, portraying Edna Turnblad, mother of the main character. Her name is Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonksi) and she’s a little on the portly side. That doesn’t keep her from bustin’ a move at every chance – she loves to dance and is pretty … Continue reading

Overweight in Alabama

Every so often, I see a news story that just brings me up short. This one caught my eye today. Apparently, the state of Alabama is trying to crack down on obesity by hitting its employees where they live – their pocketbooks. That’s right – if you work for the state of Alabama and you’re overweight, you’ll soon be paying $25.00 more per month for your health insurance as opposed to the employees who are not overweight. This adds up to $300.00 more per year. The state is calling this a financial incentive to lose weight. I haven’t decided yet … Continue reading

She’s the Man (2006)

“She’s the Man” is a loose adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play, “Twelfth Night.” Amanda Bynes plays Viola, a high school student at Cornwall who loves playing soccer, and she’s pretty good at it. Her boyfriend Justin is on the boy’s team at school and tells her she’s just as good as anyone on his team, but the school budget doesn’t extend far enough and the girls’ team is cut. She thinks the girls are just as good as the boys and wants to prove it, but the coach doesn’t even want to let them try out and create a co-ed … Continue reading

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

I watched “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” the other night, and I haven’t laughed so hard during a movie in a long time. I really enjoyed this film. Andy Anderson (Kate Hudson) works for a fashion magazine writing how-to articles, but what she really wants is to be a serious reporter. She’s interested in politics, religion, foreign affairs—but all her editor wants are stories on clothing, furniture, and fingernail polish. Hoping to prove herself someday, she keeps writing the fluff stuff, just biding her time until her big break arrives. When her editor (Bebe Neuwirth) sniffs out … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review: December 31st-January 5th

Looking for a great movie? Want to know what I think about the movies I’ve seen lately? You’ve come to the right place. I really enjoyed “Hairspray.” Tracy Turnblad, a portly teenager with an obsession for dancing, auditions to be on the “Corny Collins” show and ends up bringing an end to segregation on Corny’s stage. Seeing John Travolta wearing a dress and a fat suit was absolutely hysterical and the acting was well done – this movie is well worth your time. “Selena” has always been a favorite of mine. The true story of the dazzling Tejano pop star, … Continue reading

The Friday Movie Round-Up

What’s playing in theaters this weekend that you and your spouse or you and your family can see together? Let’s take a look: For Parents: You might want to check out the 3:10 to Yuma. It’s a remake of the 1957 Glenn Ford film and based on the novel by Elmore Leonard. The film features Russell Crowe and Christian Bale and while this is a rated R film and definitely not for the kiddies, it’s a treat to see a well done Western returning to the big screen. Parents interested in taking their teenagers should be aware that there is … Continue reading

What’s Happening In The World Of Music

And you thought she just appeared at Dollywood… not so… in fact, Dolly Parton just announced she will kick off her first major European tour since the 1970s in Denmark next year. According to Parton’s publicist, the 60-year-old country singer will begin her eight-stop tour in Horsens, 125 miles west of Copenhagen, on March 7, 2007. From there Parton will continue to Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, England and Scotland before ending the tour April 2 in Dublin, Ireland. A bit closer to home, Disney announced yesterday that “High School Musical” is hitting the road with a nationwide concert tour … Continue reading
