In “Sweet Home Alabama,” Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon) is living the life every girl dreams of. A fashion designer, she’s just launched her line with her own show and the critics are raving. To top that off, she’s dating the mayor’s son, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey) and he’s madly in love with her. So in love that he proposes in Tiffany’s and lets her pick any ring she wants. Gracie (2007)

When I first picked up “Gracie,” I thought I was in for a feel-good family film about a girl who wanted to play soccer. What I ended up with was a deeply-involved drama about a family torn apart who struggled to pull things back together. I have to say, though, I wasn’t disappointed in the film, even though my expectations were so far off base. “Gracie” is loosely based on the lives of actors Andrew and Elisabeth Shue, who also have roles within the film. Even if that were their plan they certainly wouldn’t spin it that way. Instead, the brass at the eye network would make it appear to viewers that Katie Couric herself made the decision to leave her cushy anchor job for greener pastures. Enter the Wall Street Journal. America and Racism

The other day, I woke up at 5 am to get my husband ready for work. There isn’t much on that early in the morning – mostly paid television programming. But I did manage to find the movie Glory on one channel. If you haven’t seen it, you really should. It is a magnificent movie that invokes many emotions, but don’t expect to walk away from it with the warm fuzzies. It is about the first black Union regiment that fought in the Civil War.
