Forever Young (1992)

“Forever Young” is one of my favorite romantic movies. Starring Mel Gibson, it really doesn’t get any more heart-melting than this. Daniel McCormick (Mel Gibson) is a test pilot in the year 1939. He’s deeply in love with his girlfriend, Helen, but can’t bring himself to get up the nerve to pop the question. She is hit by a bus and in a coma for six months, during which time Daniel nearly dies himself from grief. Seeking relief for his anguish, he talks to his good friend, scientist Harry Finley (George Wendt) about becoming a guinea pig for an experiment. … Continue reading

How Def Leppard Managed to not “Fade Away”

Def Leppard’s hit “Rock of Ages” from 1983’s breakout album Pyromania started out with these lyrics: Alright, I got something to say Yeah, its better to burn out, Yeah, than fade away Of course, Def Leppard was only referencing the Neil Young song “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) which also said, “It’s better to burn out/Than to fade away.” The cry of burnout out before fading away became a bit of a slogan for rockers, including Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain, who quoted that in his suicide note. However, Def Leppard managed to stay hot all these years, … Continue reading

Iconic Sex Symbols – Part 1

The other day at 6:00 a.m. (I had to wake hubby up for work), I started watching the The Bounty. That is the recount of the HMS Bounty, a British ship that was overthrown by Fletcher Christian. Normally, when I turn the television on at 6:00 a.m., I immediately go back to sleep, but a young Mel Gibson is good enough reason to stay awake! That started me to thinking about iconic sex symbols – the men whose good looks will forever be frozen in time. Here are the ones I think were extremely hot in their heyday. Some died … Continue reading

My Girl 2 (1994)

In this sequel to “My Girl,” Vada Sultenfuss is struggling to know who she is. Her dad and her new step-mom, Shelly, are expecting a baby, and they are including her in the process. She gets along well with Shelly and she’s making new friends at school, but there’s still a huge piece of her missing – she knows very little about her birth mother, who died shortly after she was born. When she gets the school assignment to write a paper about an important person who she’s never met, she decides this is the perfect time to learn more … Continue reading

My Girl (1991)

“My Girl” was the first film for newcomer Anna Chlumsky, and she puts the other, more seasoned actors, to shame. She plays Vada Sultenfuss, the eleven-year-old daughter of a widowed undertaker. Their home is the upper portion of the funeral parlor her father owns, and the bodies are embalmed in the basement. It’s no wonder, then, that Vada has a fear and a fascination with death, especially as she lives with the worry that she caused her own mother’s death. Her mother died shortly after childbirth, and Vada’s grandmother came to live in the home and take care of her. … Continue reading

He doesn’t want to go through that kind of pain again, … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review: December 24th – 29th

Wondering which movies to rent next time you’re at the video store? Come check out this week’s reviews and you’ll get some great ideas. “The Clock,” starring Judy Garland and Robert Walker, is one you may want to skip over if you’re looking for an in-depth plot. Walker plays a soldier on a two-day leave who meets the girl of his dreams, and after spending a whole day together, decides to marry her before returning to the front. That’s basically all there is to the story. It’s not a musical, so don’t expect Judy to sing. “Forever Young,” on the … Continue reading

The Price of Fame

If you are like me, you often see celebrities and stars on television impeccably dressed, the women often carrying $3,000 handbags and the men driving cars that cost almost as much as some of our houses. And I admit, there are times I am envious. To be able to be famous and enjoy all the perks of it must be grand. But then, I realize that it is not always the case. I am currently reading the biography of Anthony Perkins called Split Image. I’m not nearly through, but from page one, the stage has been set. Actor Osgood Perkins, … Continue reading

Emilio Estevez in Love

If you were alive during the 80s (and even if you weren’t) you may remember Emilio Estevez best as wrestler Andy Clark in The Breakfast Club. He was the typical jock in a movie that served as a high school microcosm of teenage angst. Emilio was officially a member of what was dubbed the Brat Pack, a group of young actors noted for starring together in movies that would forever define a decade. However, being a member of the Brat Pack did not come without some backlash. In the days before Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan ruled Hollywood nightlife, the … Continue reading
