Flipper (1996)

Dolphins are amazing creatures, and they’ve been fascinating us for years. They’ve been the focus of documentaries, movies, symbols on pieces of jewelry and home décor – we can’t get enough of ‘em. 1996 saw the release of “Flipper,” another dolphin movie, this one starring Elijah Wood and Paul Hogan. Wood plays Sandy, a teenaged boy with a huge chip on his shoulder who is sent to visit his uncle Porter (Hogan) to see if said chip can be dislodged somehow. They get off to a rocky start as Sandy breaks the rules and Porter doesn’t seem to know how … Continue reading

Free Willy II: The Adventure Home (1995)

1995 saw the release of “Free Willy II: The Adventure Home,” sequel to the 1993 movie “Free Willy.” All of the original cast was present to reprise their former roles. Well, I don’t know if the whales were the same, but all the people were. Jesse (Jason James Richter) has made a pretty decent life for himself with Glenn and Annie Greenwood, his foster parents. When his social worker stops by, Jesse assumes it’s for a social call, but in reality, they’ve finally had word of Jesse’s mother. She passed away in New York City, leaving behind an 8-year-old half-brother … Continue reading

Avalon (1990)

“Avalon” stars a nine-year-old Elijah Wood as Michael Kay, the grandson of Russian Jews who immigrated early in the 1900’s. The movie tells the story of the Krichinski family, how they all came to America one at a time, earned money to bring the next one over, and how much they relish and enjoy being Americans. As the recipient of this wonderful heritage, Michael hears them tell their stories time and time again, coming to appreciate the tales even though they are repetitive. This movie is set up differently than any I’ve seen. Told in snatches that ultimately tie together, … Continue reading

Tallest Man in the World Weds

When I was growing up, I was always fascinated by the Guinness Book of World Records. Some of the records, such as tallest man, really could not be attained through any means other than natural. But some the records achieved often enthralled me. For example, Stephen Clarke is the world’s fastest pumpkin carver. In July 2006, he carved a pumpkin in 24.03 seconds. And might I add that his pumpkin looked much better than one that would take me an hour to carve! Here is another incredible record – Erick Hernandez of Havana, Cuba was able to control a soccer … Continue reading
