The Marriage Blog Week in Review June 24-June 29

It’s the last week of June and while summer may have officially started on June 21st, the weather has been pretty wonky this year. Drought plagued North Texas for two years and in the month of June, we’ve seen over 11 inches of rain – that’s more than enough and then some and other parts of Texas have seen 18 or more inches of rain. But let’s get to our marriage blog week in review: Saturday, June 23 Relationship Problems are something we all experience at one time or another. Are you considering Writing Your Own Vows? Here’s some things … Continue reading

Animal Movies = Torture: How I Fared Through Evan Almighty

Photo by Gracey Stinson We had company in last weekend –our good friends Lee and Brenda and their two daughters, Jordan (nine) and Noelle (three and a half). We had planned on going to the zoo, but the guy who bought Mr. Meow’s piano came to pick it up at 10 o’clock on Saturday morning so we missed going during the cooler morning hours. (And they were leaving Sunday, so…) However, we decided there was still a way we could spend time with animals and keep cool doing it: at an afternoon matinee showing of Evan Almighty. I must admit, … Continue reading

Evan Almighty (2007)

Evan Almighty is a sequel to Bruce Almighty(2003). The first featured Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston in the lead roles, both actors declined to appear in Evan Almighty and that’s all right. Evan Baxter (last seen as the news anchor that Carrey tortured in the first film) has been elected to Congress. He and his family move from Buffalo, New York to the North Virginia suburbs. During Evan’s campaign, he promised to change the world, though he never clarified how. Lauren Graham (“Gilmore Girls”) stars as Joan Baxter, Evan’s wife. She suggests to Evan that he should pray to God, … Continue reading

Greatest American Dog: Further Criticisms about the Show

One of the reality TV shows I ended up enjoying the most was Kid Nation. I wish the Greatest American Dog had a format more like that. Why I Liked Kid Nation I was not expecting to like the show. A bunch of kids forming their own society? Um, yeah, I couldn’t see how that’d be interesting. So I didn’t watch. But Wayne did. He DVRd the first episode and was raving so much about it curiosity won out. I watched and fell in love with those kids. It was hard not to be impressed by so many of them. … Continue reading

Family Travel: Dolls, LEGO and Blues

Could the Mall of America get any better? American Girl fans answered yes and mall officials listened. Come November (just in time for the holidays) American Girl will call the massive shopping center home. Which means your kids have one more location to blow their allowance money on the mega-popular dolls and their mountains of accessories. The new store is making headlines because, according to company execs, American Girl is very selective about where it sells its goods. Company reps say the American Girl store in the Mall of America will span 20,000-square feet, feature two stories and include a … Continue reading

Get Smart (2008)

Would you believe … that this is a great movie with a fitting tribute to the original series, but a refreshing look at intelligence and comedy all in one package? Get Smart is a fun film that combines intelligence, sight gags and physical humor blend together to create an entertaining film that doesn’t take itself seriously and doesn’t ask the audience to either. Popcorn Humor I enjoyed the original series when I was a kid. It was fun and it was funny. Barbara Feldon was easy to admire and aspire to as the smart, savvy and beautiful Agent 99. Agent … Continue reading

The Truman Show (1998)

What if you discovered that your whole entire life was a lie, and that nothing you thought was real, was real? Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) is living a pretty ideal life. He has a nice house, a pretty wife, a good job, and no real conflict of any kind. What he does not know is that he is the main character in a television show. The place he believes to be his hometown is actually a television show set, built inside a huge dome by the Hollywood sign. Everyone he meets is an actor who has been hired to play … Continue reading
