This installment in the VeggieTales collection of spoofed Bible stories was a little bit odd to me. I didn't find it as well constructed as the films of the past. I knew they were trying to make a point, but I didn't feel they actually made it. Let's take a closer look at it.

The theme for the show was loving your family. We see Laura Carrot as Miriam, older sister to baby Moses. She resents having to take care of the baby while her parents are working in the brickyard as Pharoah's slaves. She used to get all the attention and now that there's a new baby, she's not the focus any more. But when the baby's life is in danger, Miriam comes up with an idea for a way to ensure his safety, and of course, we all know that he grew up to lead the Israelites out of bondage.

Then Larry the Cucumber tries to sing the blues, but as it turns out, you really need to be sad in order to sing the blues, and Larry is just too happy.

The last segment in our show is called "Duke and the Great Pie War." It's supposed to be a take on the story of Naomi and Ruth, and Ruth's eventual marriage to Boaz, but the political climate was heightened to such an extent, it didn't flow the same way the story does in the Bible. At any rate, Petunia is a sweet girl who came with her mother-in-law back to her own land after the death of their husbands, even though Petunia is a Rhubarbian and therefore an enemy to the people in the land where she now lives. Because of her goodness to her mother-in-law, Nona, she attracts the attention of Duke, who owns the nearby apple orchard. He gives her permission to gather the leftover apples from his field, and Nona urges her to seek his favor. They fall in love and are married.

This was an enjoyable show-we're big VeggieTales fans around here and will watch anything starring that loveable produce. But I didn't feel that this episode was equal to the others in quality.
