Become a Wilderness Explorer at the Animal Kingdom

If “Up” is one of your favorite Disney/Pixar movies, then Disney World’s Animal Kingdom has a great new surprise coming for you this spring.  Soon guests to the Animal Kingdom can become Wilderness Explorers, just like Russell from “Up.” Wilderness Explorers was the Boy Scout-style troop to which Russell belonged in the film.  An early version of this new experience was tested at the Animal Kingdom way back in the fall of 2011, and now it’s finally going to be making its debut this spring.  Wilderness Explorers isn’t a proper game like Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom; it’s closer to … Continue reading

Attractions at the Animal Kingdom

Today, in acknowledgement of the fact that I talk so much about it, I’m going to start a new feature on the Animal Kingdom. I’ll profile its various aspects: the attractions, entertainment, food, and lodging. The most obvious place to start within the Animal Kingdom is, of course, with its animals. Given that there are a ton of such attractions at the Animal Kingdom I won’t have time to dwell on any for very long. Also, because I’ve already covered the Wild Africa Trek, I’m not going to go over it again. The attractions at the Animal Kingdom can be … Continue reading

Conservation at the Animal Kingdom

One of the Animal Kingdom’s bats For all my from-childhood into-adulthood love of the fantasy worlds of Disney, the Animal Kingdom is rapidly becoming my favorite Disney World park. I know I haven’t actually visited Disney World yet, but just based on the things I’m learning about the Animal Kingdom’s dedication to conversation, the environmental and animal activist in me joins with my love of Disney to make me a huge fan of the Animal Kingdom. Recently the official Disney parks blog posted a round-up of all the ways the Animal Kingdom has in the past year promoted conservation, education, … Continue reading

The Lion King 1 ½ (2004)

“The Lion King 1 ½” is my favorite out of the three “Lion King” movies, mostly because of the sheer comedic genius of Nathan Lane, who voices Timon the meerkat. He’s hysterical, and he makes the movie. In this film, we get to see what was happening even before Simba was born. Timon was an outcast in his meerkat town. He couldn’t do anything he was asked to do – he was flighty and irresponsible. He caused many a cave-in of the meerkat tunnels, and other disasters too numerous to mention. His mother feared he’d never make a decent meerkat, … Continue reading

The Disney Blog Week in Review for May 28 – June 1

Welcome to the first week in review for the Disney blog for June. Can you believe that it’s already June? I can’t. But for many of us it’s summer vacation and summer often means a trip to somewhere. If you’re planning to go to Disney World this summer, you definitely want to check out the Disney blogs for this week. Monday, May 28 They’re Here – The Pirates Have Landed! and they brought quite a bit of plunder with them. Disney’s The Lion King

The Lion King is another great Disney film, though one that is not based already on an existing story, like “Aladdin” or “Alice in Wonderland”. It opens with animals from all over coming to meet the new lion cub Simba, who will one day rule the pride. The opening sequence of The Lion King is beautiful, as is the song “Circle of Life” that never fails to give me goosebumps. Young lion cub Simba can’t wait for the day he will grow up and become like his father, Mufasa. Simba spends his days playing with pal Nala, practicing his pouncing … Continue reading

New Members of the Billionaire Boys Club: Jack Sparrow & Will Turner

Last Friday, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest crossed the 1 billion dollar mark at the global box office and is the third film in history to cross that finish line following in such great footsteps as Titanic and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Disney is justifiably proud of their accomplishment since the film has been breaking records all over the world including holding the current #1 film spot for 2006 in the U.S. box office along with the #1 in the international box office. The Dead Man’s Chest opened in Italy yesterday and the … Continue reading

D23 Expo Headed to Japan

D23, the official Disney fan club, just keeps getting bigger and bigger.  Tickets are already on sale for the much-anticipated D23 Expo in August, and the club just announced another huge convention for 2013, this one abroad.  The D23 Expo is hitting the road, and will come to Japan on October 12-14, 2013. The D23 Expo Japan will not just be a carbon copy of the one held in Anaheim months prior.  Although there will be a lot of overlap, in merchandise and in smaller events, the Japan expo will be unique.  It’ll be held mostly in Japanese, with events … Continue reading

Newsies: Big Broadway Success

It may be one of my Most Underappreciated Disney Films, but it’s no flop on the stage: The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the Broadway version of “Newsies” has already recouped its expenses.  For a Broadway show that’s fast; in fact, “Newsies” sets a record for Disney Theatrical Productions as the show that’s made back the money spent to make it in the quickest amount of time. “Newsies” cost Disney Theatrical Productions $5 million.  It made that back in nine months after opening (on Broadway; its pre-Broadway run in New Jersey isn’t being counted here).  That’s even faster than Disney Broadway … Continue reading

New Disney World Attraction: The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow

The cycle is complete: “Pirates of the Caribbean” was a movie based on a classic Disney World ride.  Now there’s a new Disney World attraction based on the movie that was based on the ride.  The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow is a new immersive walk-through at Disney World that opened on December 6.  The Disney Parks released a behind-the-scenes video with the Imagineers detailing the attraction, and the famous talent that helped bring it to life. The centerpiece of the attraction is the virtual image projected onto the deck of a pirate’s ship: that of Captain Jack Sparrow.  But … Continue reading
