by Dale Harcombe

I first saw the illusionist at the movies after reading a review of it and thinking it sounded interesting. The reviewer at the time said it could be 'a bit slow.' I'm not a fan of slow movies. When I saw The Illusionist, I could not believe anyone had ever made this comment.

One of the great things about being a movie reviewer is the chance I have to watch movies I've been wanting to see, and also to see movies I didn't know existed. We've really had a lot of good cinema over the years, and, I'm sorry to say, we've had a lot that wasn't so great.

My very first memories of this movie take me back to the Visitor's Center on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. I was about five, and we settled into the plush seats, knowing we were about to see something special.

What if you were born with a name like Howitzer Mertelmeyer, and you wanted to make it big in Hollywood? A name like that would never draw a crowd at the box office, and certainly does not project the image you want. So you change your name to Rex Hamilton, and suddenly you're a sensation.

1000 years ago, a race of higher beings called the Urskesks became haughty, and in their arrogance cracked a huge crystal that split them into two separate beings. The Urskeks became the Mystics, great beings of peace, and the Skeksis, retched looking vulture like beings of evil.

My family happened upon this movie rather accidentally. It was showing at the Avalon Theater (mentioned in another blog) as the second feature to another movie we were excited to see, and to this day, none of us can remember what that other movie was.

In the year 1906, the city of San Francisco was rocked with the worst earthquake it had ever seen, and it still holds the record for the most destructive.
