“Lady and the Tramp” Released from the Vault

If you like to play the Disney Vault game then I have some important news for you: one of Disney’s most famous love stories, “Lady and the Tramp,” was freed from its locked depths this month. I’m not sure how long it will be available, probably for a number of months, but if you’ve been waiting to purchase this film now’s the time to do it. Of course Disney does a bit more than just let movies out of the Vault; the company always dresses up the discs in fancy editions with special content; whether or not the content is … Continue reading

Cozies, Stray Cats, and Past Dogs: An Interview with Marion Moore Hill

I’m pleased to introduce you to mystery writer Marion Moore Hill. I’ve been trying to coordinate an interview with her for months now, but my efforts were somewhat waylaid by having to tend to affairs with my mom. However, I am pleased to finally bring you this long overdue interview. Enjoy! (And, Marion, thank you so much again for your patience and cooperation.) Courtney Mroch: What kind of things do you write about? (Genre, subject matter, themes, what have you.) Marion Moore Hill: I write traditional, amateur-sleuth mysteries (sometimes called cozies). I do two series, the Scrappy Librarian Mysteries and … Continue reading

Catching Up with Reality Stars

There were two reality star weddings recently. The Velvet Teddy Bear, Ruben Studdard, married his girlfriend Surata Zuri McCants last Saturday at the Canterbury United Methodist Church in Birmingham, AL. More than 300 guests attended the wedding, all dressed in black and white. Ruben and his 20 groomsmen wore black tuxes while the bride wore a white and ivory Casablanca wedding gown. After the 30-minute ceremony, the newlyweds left for the reception at the Rosewood Hall at SoHo Square in Homewood. McCants and Studdard married when McCants showed up at an Atlanta Wal-Mart CD signing in 2006. McCant volunteered to … Continue reading

Jennifer Garner stars as Gray, a girl whose fiancé has been killed in an accident, in this strange and unsettling movie. How does she prepare herself to deal with his death when she was getting ready to start a life with him? Going off to the bathroom to seek some solitude, she climbs into the tub and draws the curtain, just wanting everyone to leave her alone. Random Acts of Kindness—Spreading “Happyness”

It may have been released several weeks ago, but Hollywood’s still buzzing about the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness.” The film tells the real-life story of a homeless man (played by Will Smith) who worked his way to becoming a millionaire. At the rate my life speeds by I’ll never get a chance to see the movie in a theater (I’ll likely catch it on DVD), but the same is not true for dozens of infrequent moviegoers in Washington, D.C. Recently, about 100 of D.C.’s homeless people were guests of the mayor’s office for a screening of “The Pursuit of … Continue reading

Celebrity News Week in Review for September 29, 2006

The celebrity news you may have missed! 10. Aaron Carter Calls Off Engagement The engagement ring didn’t even have time to get warm on her finger when Aaron called off the engagement. It seemed a bit hasty anyhow. Here’s a clue Aaron – you are only 18 – grow up, then think about getting married! 9. Edward Albert Dies Some people may have missed this as I never saw it on CNN, but Edward Albert, son of Eddie Albert, died this week of lung cancer at the age of 55. An accomplished actor and activist in his own right, Edward … Continue reading

Terrell Owens Gets Reality Show

Football fans may or may not like it, but Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens is going to be the star of his own reality show. The reason I say fans may or may not like it is because many fans don’t like Owen due to his outspokenness and huge ego. It’s not that Owens cannot deliver on the field – he can. Drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1996 NFL draft, he helped the team win 13 games that year. In 2000, he made 20 catches for 283 yards, breaking a 50 year old NFL record. However, … Continue reading

13 Going on 30 (2004)

When I first saw the ads for “13 Going on 30,” I thought, “Oh, it’s just a girl version of ‘Big.’” You can read my concerns about “Big” here, but to summarize, I felt that the boy had been put into situations he couldn’t possibly have handled well and come out unscathed, including a sexual relationship. How do you go back to being a child after having experienced adult physical relationships? So as I sat down to watch “13 Going on 30,” I was understandably concerned. I’m so delighted to say, though, that I was unnecessarily worried. Jenna Rink is … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review

Or should I say, “two weeks in review?” We’re combining the last two weeks into one today, and it makes a fun assortment of movies to add to your “to be watched” list. We’ll start out with “Bee Movie,” the new film just released to DVD which was written by and stars Jerry Seinfeld. I was pleasantly surprised by the fresh idea in the plot, but curious why they chose to include a little bit of swearing in a film for families. I also reviewed “Autumn in New York” for the purposes of venting my intense feelings of dislike for … Continue reading

Saboteur – Dean Hughes

Dean Hughes is one of my favorite LDS authors, as I have proven by repeatedly acting like an idiot whenever I’ve had chance to meet him. “Saboteur” is his 2006 release, a story of espionage, danger, and love set during World War II. Andy Gledhill’s mother is French and he speaks the language well. When he decides to leave his hometown of Delta, Utah, and become a paratrooper, his skills catch the eye of the Office of Strategic Services, and they ask him if he’d be willing to undertake an unusual assignment. They want to drop him into France to … Continue reading
