Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

I will admit I was hesitant to see this one. You see, I love Katherine Patterson, and frankly, I never feel as if the movie could possibly come close to the book. I have to admit though, I was pleasantly surprised. Plot Summary Bridge to Terabithia is a charming story of Leslie Burke, a girl who moves to a new town and finds herself the oddball. Her parents are writers and don’t let her watch any television. Consequently, she has an incredible sense of imagination. I think the word “vivid” might be apt. She makes fast friends with the neighbor … Continue reading

Baby Geniuses (1999)

I liked this movie, I liked this movie not. There are points on both sides of the equation. Dr. Kinder (Kathleen Turner) has established a huge scientific laboratory for the purpose of studying babies. She believes that babies communicate in their own special ways and that if she could tap into that language, she would be world-famous. She masks all her plans with talk of philanthropy and fundraisers, hiding her real intent – to make lots and lots of money. Her niece, Robin (Kim Cattrall) has always thought things were a little fishy with her aunt, but she’s never quite … Continue reading

Battle of the Books

My twin boys are busy this summer reading up for Battle of the Books. They love to read, have great memories, and love to discuss (argue) about books, so this a great program for them. We’ve had a lot of fun asking each other questions about the books we’ve read. The kids actually do a lot better than I do! Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for students in grades 4th-12th. Our elementary school has sponsored a team for many years. Students who are interested in participating read from a list of pre-chosen books. Most of the … Continue reading

Warts And All

Recently Valorie reviewed the movie, ‘Bridge to Terabithia.’ I haven’t seen the movie but it is a great book. It is one my son and I read and discussed along with several other Katherine Paterson novels, as he was growing up. One of the books I own is ‘The Invisible Child’ by Katherine Paterson. This is a collection of her essays and speeches delivered between 1975 and 2000. For a writer, it’s always interesting to read about other writers and their path to publication. Katherine Paterson mentions she had seven years of rejection slip before her novel, ‘The Sign of … Continue reading

Should Young Kids Watch Movies Where a Child Dies?

The other day Tyler wanted to rent Bridge to Terabithia and I admit I was reluctant to do so as first. I was concerned because one of the main characters, who happens to be a young girl, dies. I read the book years ago when I was in school and although I enjoyed it, I recalled the shock of her death. I also knew that although the book is read in many schools, it has also been on the list of banned books several times. We’ve had the talk about death but mainly in the context of adults dying. Several … Continue reading
