Kids and Movies: How Young is Too Young?

My 4-year-old daughter has been eagerly counting down the days until the release of “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.” We have the original on DVD, and frankly I’m surprised the movie’s images haven’t been permanently seared on our TV screen given the amount of times she’s watched it. The DreamWorks movie about Central Park Zoo animals that end up in Madagascar (and in the sequel—Africa) is age appropriate for children ages 3 and up (at least in my opinion), which is why I didn’t think twice about shelling out $15 to take my lion/hippo/zebra/giraffe/monkey/penguin/lemur-loving child to an actual movie theater to … Continue reading

New to Marriage Blog but Not to Marriage

I’m popping in to say, ‘Hi’ and feeling excited to be joining Courtney on the marriage blog. My husband and I have been married for over 40 years, so hopefully I’ve learned something about marriage in that time to share with you all. Since May 2007 I have been writing in the Christian area and popping in for the occasional guest movie review. A number of my blogs in Christian have covered marriage. You can check some of them out below. Much of my life involves writing. I’m fortunate to have a husband who fully supports me. He thinks I … Continue reading

Grace is Gone (2007)

Last night I stayed up late to watch “Grace is Gone.” I have to say, it’s been awhile since a film touched me so very deeply. John Cusack brilliantly portrays Stanley Phillips, a man who wanted to serve in the military so badly, he cheated on the vision test so he could get into the Army. When his doctor on base discovers that his eyesight is terrible, he kicks Stanley out, but Stanley has already met Grace, a beautiful cadet, and they are married. They have two daughters, Heidi and Dawn, and they’ve built a life together. When Grace is … Continue reading

Never Been Kissed (1999)

“Never Been Kissed” is a romantic comedy starring Drew Barrymore as Josi Gellar, a young woman who’s intelligent and studious and good at her job . . . but not very stylish or “with it.” She doesn’t pay any attention to her clothes or her hair, just her work for the newspaper. When the idea strikes to send a journalist into the local high school to investigate what life is really like for today’s youth, Josi is chosen to be the one. At twenty-five, she still looks young. She registers for high school, but she feels really dumb about the … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review June 15th – 21st

Welcome to our Week in Review! Wondering what to pop into your DVD player tonight? Here are some ideas for you. We started out with a review of the romantic comedy “Sweet Home Alabama,” starring Reese Witherspoon, Josh Lucas, and Patrick Dempsey. When Melanie receives the wedding proposal of a lifetime, she’s beyond thrilled, but has to take care of a little business before she can proceed with her plans. That business involves getting a divorce from her previous husband. This movie features moments of comedy as well as a look into what’s really important in life. “P.S. I Love … Continue reading

P.S. I Love You (2007)

Ever since I found out that Hillary Swank clips coupons, I’ve been a big fan. I know–that’s a silly reason to love someone’s work but on top of being a good actress and taking on diverse types of roles, you gotta love a fellow coupon clipper. With that said, this is going to be a mixed review of P.S. I Love You. What I Loved About this Movie There are several things I loved about this movie. First of all the whole premise is fantastically romantic. Her young husband, who was faced with a terminal brain tumor, penned letters while … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review June 9th-14th

Welcome to our Movies Week in Review! If you’ve been wondering what’s hot and what’s not, you’ll want to be sure to read the following reviews. We began the week with Lyn’s review of “The Adventures of Milo and Otis,” about a puppy and a kitten who become friends. Unlike other movies that feature animals as their main characters, Milo and Otis do not speak, but rather, a narrator provides a running dialogue for us. It’s an enjoyable film, but not one packed with a lot of action. Next, Valorie took us on a tour of “I am Legend,” which … Continue reading

Because I Said So (2007)

Don’t waste your time. Seriously, I haven’t been this disappointed in a movie since I paid money to watch Home on the Range with my daughter. The film features Diane Keaton, Mandy Moore, Lauren Graham and Piper Perabo. Keaton plays Daphne Wilder, a mother of three beautiful daughters (Moore, Graham and Perabo). She dances in attendance at the weddings of her two older daughters Maggie and Mae (Graham and Perabo) but wrings her hands in worry that Milly (Moore) is never going to be happy. Milly has a string of bad relationships that we hear about more than see. She … Continue reading

I Am Legend (2007)

I Am Legend is not my typical movie. While I’m not fond of the science fiction genre, I am incredibly fond of spending time with my spouse and this was the choice du jour. So I settled in for what I thought would be an incredibly long two hours of science ‘sciencey’ boy stuff. While it’s still not my favorite movie, I do have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I Am Legend, is actually a movie based on the same titled book written by Richard Matheson. This is not the first movie that’s been based on this book but … Continue reading
