Barbie Mariposa (2008)

"Barbie Mariposa" is another installment in the series of movies starring Barbie in various roles. This time, we're meeting Mariposa, a butterfly fairy who is a friend of Elena's, who we met in Fairytopia. The butterfly fairies live in Flutterfield, a land which is far away from Fairytopia. The fairies can't fly back and forth to visit each other because they are in danger - evil monsters want to eat the butterfly fairies, and they can't leave the safety of the lights of their village. Those lights were invented by a kind and beautiful queen named Marybella, and as long as she lives, the lights will stay lit, and the butterfly fairies will be safe. But if they wander too far out of the circle of lights, they are in danger.

Mariposa likes to go to the edge of the lights and look up at the stars. When she's surrounded by light, she can't see them, but when she creeps to the edge, she is amazed at how brilliant they are. She loves looking for constellations in the sky and she loves reading books about the world beyond Flutterfield. She often doesn't feel like she belongs there.

While attending a party at the palace, she meets Prince Carlos, a handsome butterfly fairy in his own right. They share a love of books and strike up a friendship, so the next day, when Carlos is in trouble, he comes to Mariposa for help. The queen has been poisoned and will die in two days if she doesn't get help. Carlos gives Mariposa a map and tells her that if something happens to him, he wants her to follow the map, which will lead her to an antidote for the queen. When Carlos is put in protective custody in the palace, Mariposa knows it's up to her to save the queen. If the queen dies, the lights will go out, and the whole village will be destroyed.

To be honest, all these Barbie fairy movies are starting to look alike to me and I think they should have just left it at Fairytopia. But my kids enjoyed the movie and Mattel will make a bundle in merchandise sales, so I guess they're reaching their goals in that regard.
