Would You Buy Your Preschooler a “Twilight” Barbie?

I wouldn’t. And not just because my preschool daughter isn’t into Barbies and has no clue that twilight is something other than the time of day immediately following sunset. Actually, I’m not quite sure she knows that twilight has anything to do with the sun at all. Regardless, Mattel will be disappointed that they won’t be scoring 25 bucks from my bank account in the near future. Your wallet, on the other hand, might not be so lucky. If your child is obsessed with Edward and Bella, brace yourself. Mattel has decided to make a few bucks from the Twilight … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review – April 14th-19th

Thanks for joining us for our Movies Week in Review! We may just be able to steer you toward a film you’ll really enjoy. We began the week with a guest blog by Dale Harcombe, our Christian blogger. She shared with us one of her favorite films, “A Man Called Peter,” the story of Peter Marshall. He was an immigrant from Scotland who came to America and started his own small church, eventually becoming Chaplain of the United States Senate, but his way was not always easy. The movie is based on the book written by his wife – Catherine … Continue reading

Barbie Mariposa (2008)

“Barbie Mariposa” is another installment in the series of movies starring Barbie in various roles. This time, we’re meeting Mariposa, a butterfly fairy who is a friend of Elena’s, who we met in Fairytopia. The butterfly fairies live in Flutterfield, a land which is far away from Fairytopia. The fairies can’t fly back and forth to visit each other because they are in danger – evil monsters want to eat the butterfly fairies, and they can’t leave the safety of the lights of their village. Those lights were invented by a kind and beautiful queen named Marybella, and as long … Continue reading

How TV and Movies Have Infiltrated the World of Toys

There are two items on my 3-year-old’s Christmas list that she would be crushed if Santa did not bring her—-a minivan for her dollhouse and Squawkers McCaw the talking parrot. Interestingly, they are among the only toys in all of Toyland that are not tied to a movie or TV show. (Though, for the amount of times we’ve seen that Squawkers commercial, he might as well have had his own TV show.) If you have children or are shopping for kids this Christmas, you understand what I’m talking about. From action figures to bicycles to books, stuffed animals, Play-Doh and … Continue reading

Barbie as the Island Princess (2007)

I am constantly impressed by the level of quality not only in the CGI animation, but also in the storytelling of the Barbie movies. The latest installment, Barbie as the Island Princess is yet another remarkable addition to this must-own collection. A Tale Of Woe Barbie stars as Ro in this film, a young girl who was shipwrecked on an island in the South Seas. She is raised by friendly animals that she can communicate with. Sagi the red panda, Azul the beautiful, royal peacock and Tika, the elephant. Ro has no idea where she came from or who her … Continue reading

Barbie Fairytopia: The Magic of the Rainbow (2007)

Elina is a hero in the land of Fairytopia. She saved all the fairies from Laverna’s evil plan to kidnap the guardian fairies and use their powers to become the most powerful fairy of all in the movie “Fairytopia,” and in “Fairytopia Mermaidia,” she became a mermaid to save her friend Prince Nalu from another one of Laverna’s schemes. But not all the other fairies appreciate her reputation, as she’s about to discover in “The Magic of the Rainbow.” The fairy guardians are each choosing an apprentice to learn how to do the dance of spring, a crucial ritual in … Continue reading

The Barbie Diaries (2006)

After watching and mostly enjoying the recent rash of Barbie movies based on different legends and fairy tales, I was curious to see “The Barbie Diaries.” I’m sorry to say that I was disappointed. To begin with, the animation was odd. Barbie looked nothing like the Barbie we’ve come to expect in the other films, and all the characters looked too real, as though we were trying to break through that Barbie mentality and see them as being real people. But that didn’t work either, because the details were missing. It was more realistic, and yet it wasn’t. The storyline … Continue reading

Barbie in The Twelve Dancing Princesses (2006)

In this, the most recent release in the Barbie movie series, our golden girl stars as Genevieve, the seventh of twelve daughters born to a loving king and queen. Unfortunately, the queen has passed away, leaving the king alone to raise the children, but he’s done fairly well on his own. Each girl has their own personality and their own talents, and their days are spent developing those talents. Each afternoon they gather together to dance, a tradition their mother began. She loved dancing and even had a pavilion built outside the castle for that purpose. The king begins to … Continue reading

Barbie in The Magic of Pegasus (2005)

At last, we see Barbie show some temper! Starring as Princess Annika in “The Magic of Pegasus,” she chafes at her parents’ instruction that she is to stay inside the castle. She even throws a tantrum, telling her parents that they are ruining her life. Just an hour or so later, after sneaking out of the castle to go ice skating down in the village, she begins to understand why her parents were keeping such a close eye on her – a wizard named Wenlock swoops down and tries to carry her off. She is saved just in time by … Continue reading

Barbie in The Princess and the Pauper (2004)

Next in the Barbie movie series is “The Princess and the Pauper.” Anneliese is a princess, used to being pampered and dressed in the finest clothes. Her day is scheduled, she must be perfect at all times, and she is engaged to be married to the king of a nearby kingdom. She longs for her freedom. Every night she dreams about what it would be like to do whatever she wanted to do for just one day, but that chance is never given to her. In the meantime, she has fallen in love with Julian, her tutor, but she knows … Continue reading
