The Barbie Diaries (2006)

After watching and mostly enjoying the recent rash of Barbie movies based on different legends and fairy tales, I was curious to see “The Barbie Diaries.” I’m sorry to say that I was disappointed. To begin with, the animation was odd. Barbie in The Twelve Dancing Princesses (2006)

In this, the most recent release in the Barbie movie series, our golden girl stars as Genevieve, the seventh of twelve daughters born to a loving king and queen. Unfortunately, the queen has passed away, leaving the king alone to raise the children, but he’s done fairly well on his own. Each girl has their own personality and their own talents, and their days are spent developing those talents. Each afternoon they gather together to dance, a tradition their mother began. Barbie in The Magic of Pegasus (2005)

At last, we see Barbie show some temper! Starring as Princess Annika in “The Magic of Pegasus,” she chafes at her parents’ instruction that she is to stay inside the castle. She even throws a tantrum, telling her parents that they are ruining her life. Just an hour or so later, after sneaking out of the castle to go ice skating down in the village, she begins to understand why her parents were keeping such a close eye on her – a wizard named Wenlock swoops down and tries to carry her off. In this installment of the Barbie movie series, Elena is a flower fairy who lives deep inside a peony. Barbie in Rapunzel (2002)

Second in the Barbie movie series is “Rapunzel.” The damsel with unusually long hair has lived her entire life in an enchanted castle, behind a wall that is so high, only a mighty dragon named Sir Hugo is strong enough to fly up and over. Rapunzel is unaware of the world that lies beyond the wall and has been content to live a quiet life, acting as a servant/daughter to Gothel, a querulous witch voiced by Anjelica Huston. Fairytopia: Mermaidia (2006)

In the movie “Fairytopia,” we met Elina, a wingless fairy who must save the rest of the fairies from the fate prescribed for them by Laverna, an enchantress who is determined to take over the land. Elina is helped along the way by the prince of the merpeople, Prince Nalu, who feeds Elina some magic seaweed which allows her to breathe underwater. He saves Elina’s life and she defeats Laverna. In “Fairytopia: Mermaidia,” it’s Elina’s turn to save Prince Nalu’s life. Laverna is back, more determined than ever to overthrow the kingdom and rule it herself.
