Your Child’s Name Could Impact His or Her Future

Would a Rose, by any other name, smell just a sweet? Perhaps Rose’s parents would think so. They obviously have very positive associations with the name that brings to mind a beautiful flower. Other people may not look upon her name quite so favorably. Research suggests that a person’s name shapes the course of his or her life. Parents have so many factors to consider when choosing a name for a new baby. Should you name the baby after a relative? Would a name that is currently cool be a good idea? How about a name that reflects your family’s … Continue reading

How to Encourage Children to Give Back

Each child should learn the importance of giving back, a lesson that will stay with him or her for a lifetime. Giving our children the opportunity to build character and become excellent human beings is one of the responsibilities and the pleasures of being a parent. Not to take away from the importance of this lesson for our children in the future, encouraging children to give back also has the added bonus of eliminating much of the “gimmies” for us parents, right here and now. Did you know that kids are instinctual givers? They are proud to give of themselves, … Continue reading

Are Your Trust Issues Holding You Back?

After a divorce it is natural to have a few trust issues. The person you put all of your trust in betrayed you and hurt you deeply. It is difficult to open yourself up to the possibility of that kind of pain again. You don’t want to feel vulnerable, and understandably so. Nobody expects you to rush into anything, so give yourself some time to deal with these trust issues now, so that they don’t continue to hold you back in the future. I’ve had a fair number of bad men in my life, as a result it has been … Continue reading

Back to the Basics

A few days ago I got the bright idea of taking my son to the Dinosaur Museum here in Utah. They had this great deal going on, so admission was only $2 a person. As a single mom where money is always tight, these are the kind of deals I thrive on. Apparently, just about every other mom in the state of Utah does too. The line was packed clear around the building and parking was a nightmare, but Logan was so excited about seeing the dinosaurs that I couldn’t just turn around. Luckily the line moved fairly quickly and … Continue reading

The Future is the Present Before You Know It

I went to the park with my toddler and my baby today, and had a great time. The weather was beautiful and we met some friends there. Usually, my little man loves to be outside, and sit in his stroller and watch the other kids run around. Today, I got a little glimpse into future park play dates. Recently, my baby has gotten to be quite squirmy. He wants to be on the move even though he can’t even crawl yet! He is rolling over though, and I’ve decided really needs his space. He kept fussing in the stroller for … Continue reading

The Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler Book Review

The teenage years can be a time of discovering yourself. For Josh and Emma, this normal exploration goes one step more when they find their future selves online, several years into the future. The year is 1996, and Emma has just gotten a new computer, a guilt gift from her estranged father. When best friend Josh comes over with a AOL CD-ROM (remember AOL–America Online), their lives change. Somehow a portal opens up to Facebook, leaving the teens confusing and curious. Why are all of these people talking about what they had for dinner? It isn’t long before Josh and … Continue reading

Special Needs Blog Week in Review – April 1 – 7, 2012

Every week, the Special Needs Blog Week in Review gives you a brief description of all of the blogs that appeared there in the past seven days. This is a good way to find the blogs that you missed, but perhaps would have liked to read when they first appeared. The Special Needs Podcast Roundup went up on April 2, 2012. This time, I’d like to point out an episode of NPR’s “All Things Considered”. The episode is called “N.Y. Preschool Starts DNA Testing for Admission”. If something in the child’s DNA makes the school think that he or she … Continue reading

Back-to-School Cool

Gray is the new blue; skorts rule; and accessories are the new underwear–a definite must-have. This according to the back-to-school fashion police. Thank goodness my kid wears uniforms to school. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, then you probably know that millions of students from coast-to-coast are getting ready to head back to class. In fact, in many states the kiddos are already hitting the books. Still, if you are an avid or even occasional TV viewer then you might think that school has nothing to do with books and oh, I don’t know, learning tangible skills, and is … Continue reading
