Monster-in-Law (2005)

Your enjoyment of “Monster-in-Law” will be in direct proportion to your ability to tolerate some language. Charlotte, known as Charlie to her friends (Jennifer Lopez) is a free-spirited, genuinely kind girl who keeps herself busy with several different odd jobs, including walking dogs. She isn’t living her dreams, but she’s content with what she has and makes the most of every day, joyfully. When she meets handsome doctor Kevin (Michael Vartan) he’s attracted to this sense of peace she exudes. It’s something he’s never known, growing up with the emotionally-charged Viola Fields (Jane Fonda) talk-show host, activist, woman on the … Continue reading

A Good Woman (2005)

“A Good Woman” is based on the Oscar Wilde play, “Lady Windermere’s Fan,” and stars Scarlett Johansson as Meg Windemere, a young lady who has been married one year to the love of her life, Robert (Mark Umbers). They go to stay for a time at an Italian resort, where they enjoy the lush living, luxurious accommodations, and get swept up in the society. A Mrs. Erlynne (Helen Hunt) is the talk of the town and the focus of all the gossip—she’s said to be a loose woman, a person without morals, and for a time it would appear that … Continue reading

Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (2005)

When Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) took down the bad guys and saved the pageant at the end of “Miss Congeniality,” she became something of a celebrity. Now, in “Miss Congeniality 2,” she’s trying to return to work as an FBI agent, but her face is too famous. A curious and adoring fan interrupts a sting at a bank, and she realizes that the days of being an anonymous agent are over. This isn’t such a bad thing, though – her boss comes to her with a unique proposition. She should take the celebrity status she has and use it to … Continue reading

Hollywood Do-gooders Strike Again

Can you image walking across the stage at your high school graduation and locking eyes with actress Sandra Bullock? That’s exactly what happened to some unsuspecting New Orleans high school seniors just a few days ago. Bullock and her husband Jesse James sat in the front row to witness 191 students receive their diplomas. The students make up the first graduating class from Warren Easton High School since Hurricane Katrina nearly leveled it in 2005. According to the school’s principal, Bullock donated more than $100,000 to the school and provided more than two dozen $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors. School … Continue reading

Hamster Successfully Cohabitates with Snake

The best unlikely animal friends stories are the ones where predators and their prey ignore the call of nature and become buddies instead. I could fill this blog with such stories, or even just animal friendship stories, but I try to space it out. I couldn’t ignore this 2006 tale from Japan, however, that garnered international attention. BBC News has the details. Aochan is a two-year-old rat snake residing at the Mutsugoro Okoku zoo in Tokyo. He’s a bit of a picky eater; he rejected the frozen rats presented to him by the zookeepers. So instead, in the fall of … Continue reading

The New Tinker Bell

I caught a bit of one of Disney’s recent “Tinker Bell” movies on the Disney Channel last week. I’m not even sure which one it was, but I liked what I saw. I just got distracted from the program during the commercials, and forgot to check out the rest. I know I would have loved the movie when I was younger; just about any fantasy story appealed to me, and the few minutes of the Tinker Bell movie I saw contained an entertaining blend of fantasy, humor, action/adventure, and a good balance of time between its male and female leads. … Continue reading

Is supermodel Gisele Bundchen heading down the aisle with her football star boyfriend Tom Brady? According to New York newspapers, that’s not a RUMOR. Cher: The Original Diva – Part 2

When I last left off in my Cher blog, it was the end of the 70s. She was twice divorced and her record career had stalled. So, what do you do when you aren’t selling records? You reinvent yourself as an actress. At the age of 36 (often considered “old” in Hollywood), Cher starred in the Broadway production of Com Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. She received critical praise and later starred in the film version. She appeared in Silkwood as unglamorous lesbian – showing us a completely different side of Cher. For the role, … Continue reading

Profile of a Homeschooled Olympian: Katie Hoff

As we approach the 2008 Summer Olympics, now is a good time to talk about some Olympians who have been homeschooled. Being able to make education work around training through homeschooling is something many of these athletes such as Katie Hoff have in common with each other. According to her message board at www.katie-hoff.com, she felt that homeschool and public school has their advantages, you have to decide which one works for you. She also mentioned that she had friends who invited her to public school dances, which she took advantage of for the “socialization”. Kate Hoff was the youngest … Continue reading

A Bride Most Begrudging – Deeanne Gist

I love reading books from Bethany House. I know I’m going to get a good story without the objectionable content I might find from other publishers. “A Bride Most Begrudging” didn’t disappoint. The year is 1643. When Lady Constance Morrow goes to the wharf to plead for the release of her convicted uncle, scheduled to be sent to the colonies to work off his sentence, the captain sees an opportunity and detains her on the boat. He locks her up with women who are being sent as tobacco brides, and she sails the ocean, far away from her father and … Continue reading
